Under general supervision, a Civil Engineer performs professional civil engineering work including design layout and plan review. The Civil Engineer may supervise technical or paraprofessional Engineering staff. The Civil Engineer classification is the entry-level class within the professional engineering career ladder. Assignments provide opportunities for independent judgment in the design, management, and review of projects. This class performs related duties as required.
Work is performed under the direct supervision and guidance of a registered engineer who instructs the Civil Engineer in project management, engineering methodologies, and engineering principles. Work is reviewed through meetings, conferences, inspections, and results achieved. The Civil Engineer class differs from the Senior Civil Engineer class by the latter having registration in the state of Arizona as a Civil Engineer and performing more difficult and varied professional engineering work with minimal direct supervision.
Some employees may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Senior Civil Engineer upon meeting specific criteria-based promotion requirements of performance and registration as a Professional (Civil) Engineer in the state of Arizona. This class is FLSA exempt – professional.
Salary range: $98,070.75 - $
A Senior Civil Engineer, under general supervision, performs advanced responsible professional engineering work. This class directs and reviews the work of lower-level professional and paraprofessional engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors, etc. Assignments are broad in scope and require independent judgment and initiative in technical decision-making. A Senior Civil Engineer may specialize in a particular field (e.g., storm drainage, sewer and water, roadways, special improvement districts, construction administration) and act as the City's technical expert in that field.
Some employees may progress to this class by noncompetitive promotion upon meeting criteria-based promotion requirements of performance and registration as a Professional (Civil) Engineer in Arizona. This class performs related duties and is FLSA exempt – professional.
