We are a 100% employee‑owned, family‑run heavy civil construction company that self‑performs underground utility installation, earthwork, and concrete work. We’re currently seeking an experienced Controller to oversee and lead the financial operations of our underground civil construction business. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, effective job cost management, and strategic financial planning to support long‑term company growth.

Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting
  • Oversee all day‑to‑day accounting operations including A/R, A/P, payroll, job cost accounting, and general ledger activity
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Perform variance analysis on budgets, estimates, and actuals and communicate insights to leadership and project teams
  • Develop and maintain a chart of accounts tailored to underground and heavy civil construction operations
Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Support the annual budgeting process
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting, revenue projections, and bonding capacity analysis
  • Partner with executive leadership on strategic planning and long‑range financial modeling
Internal Controls & Compliance
  • Establish and maintain internal accounting controls to safeguard company assets
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and construction industry requirements
  • Oversee audits, review financial workflows, and implement process improvements
  • Manage insurance reporting, equipment capitalization, depreciation schedules, and tax filings
Construction‑Specific Accounting
  • Oversee and optimize job costing systems and processes
  • Manage subcontractor compliance including certificates of insurance, lien waivers, and billings
  • Review and approve progress billings, pay applications, change orders, and retention
  • Ensure accurate tracking of equipment usage, rentals, fuel costs, and fleet‑related expenses
  • Assist with bonding, prequalification statements, and financial packages for public and private bids
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Support project managers with financial insight, cost control strategies, and real‑time job performance data
  • Lead and mentor accounting staff and support financial literacy across the organization
  • Collaborate closely with operations, estimating, and executive leadership teams
  • Communicate proactively with banks, CPA firms, insurance providers, and bonding companies

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in construction (heavy civil or underground preferred)
  • Strong understanding of job costing, WIP schedules, percent‑complete accounting, and project billing
  • Experience with construction accounting software (Viewpoint/Vista, Foundation, Sage 300, CMiC, or similar)
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP and construction industry compliance standards
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to communicate financial information clearly
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification
  • Experience in underground utilities, excavation, trenching, or heavy civil infrastructure projects
  • Familiarity with bidding processes, bonding requirements, and public works compliance
  • Experience with equipment cost allocation and fleet management
