Experience:
1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified similar experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to a ten‑year maximum - New Hire
Education:
1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position
To assist in providing for the security and protection for students, staff, and property at assigned site; to gather information to resolve security issues and determine appropriate response; to convey information and provide written support.
Key Responsibilities- Assist administrators in enforcing all school district regulations and state laws and report infractions to the appropriate authorities.
- Serve as witness in a disciplinary due‑process hearing or court case as required.
- Submit oral and written reports to the school/district as required.
- Maintain vigilance and assist in crime prevention on campuses and sites.
- Identify students and non‑students who are in violation of school rules or state laws and report to the appropriate authorities.
- Assist in student control in surrounding neighborhood as appropriate.
- Assist bus drivers with bus security and discipline problems; ride school bus as needed.
- Assist with extracurricular events as needed.
- Maintain regular and on‑time attendance.
- Perform other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools.
- High School diploma or GED required.
- College classes in criminal justice or related field preferred.
- Experience working with youth and public preferred.
- Experience in law enforcement or school security preferred.
- Models the attributes and skills of the MPS Portrait of a Graduate.
- Demonstrates commitment to the MPS Promise that every student is known by name, served by strength and need, and graduates ready for college, career, and community.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the public; good verbal and written communication skills; maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of drugs and alcohol and their detection and effects.
- Ability to work split shifts or extra duty events when needed.
- Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time.
- Successfully pass agility test for security staff.
- Successful completion of security training program prior to the end of the probationary period.
Physical Requirements
- Work is primarily performed on school grounds (elementary, middle, or high schools); both indoor and outdoor settings, regardless of weather conditions.
- Interactions with students, staff, parents, and occasionally law enforcement.
- Must handle confrontations, threats, or emergencies calmly and efficiently.
- May include early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends for events.
- Frequent walking, standing, and patrolling for extended periods.
- May need to restrain individuals or break up physical altercations.
- Occasionally lift or carry items (e.g., barricades, safety equipment) up to 50 lbs.
