Description / Duties
This classification has been designated as a non-classified, non-merit system, at-will position.

The Assistant Transportation Director assists with the overall planning, direction, and operation of the Transportation Department, including development of the City’s Transportation Master Plan and implementation of the Transportation Department Capital Improvement Program in close collaboration with the Engineering Department and external agencies such as the Arizona Department of Transportation, Maricopa County Department of Transportation, and neighboring cities.
Responsibilities include:
- Supervising, directing, and managing the Traffic Engineering Division’s activities – Traffic Studies, Intelligent Transportation System (traffic signals), Project Review, Interagency Coordination, Temporary Traffic Control, Bicycle and Pedestrian functions.
- Coordinating training and overseeing all personnel assigned to the Traffic Engineering Division.
- Advising high‑level City Management on transportation matters throughout Mesa and acting on behalf of the Transportation Department Director when designated.
- Managing complex engineering problems, coordinating local and regional transportation issues through the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), and maintaining independence in work assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Planning, or Civil Engineering.
- Extensive (5+ years) work experience related to Traffic Engineering.
- Extensive (5+ years) administrative or supervisory experience.
Special Requirements:
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) by date of hire or promotion and maintain the license throughout employment, or certified as a Professional Transportation Planner (PTP) or through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
- Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date.
Preferred/Desirable
Qualifications:
- Experience effectively dealing with the general public and elected officials.
- A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related discipline or Public Administration.
