Job Description & How to Apply Below

The Groomer position at Petco in Mesquite, TX is a full-time role for experienced pet stylists ready to grow within a pet-first retail environment. With over 60 years of commitment to improving pets' lives, Petco equips its groomers with top-tier supplies, structured career development paths, and a workplace grounded in authenticity and teamwork.

Role Overview

As a Pet Stylist, your primary purpose is to deliver expert-level grooming services while prioritizing the safety, comfort, and well-being of every animal in your care. This role extends beyond basic grooming — it involves building trust with pet parents, educating them on at-home maintenance, and contributing to a clean, safe salon environment.

Core Responsibilities
  • Full-service grooming: bathing, drying, brushing, breed-specific haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning
  • Equipment operation: safely use and maintain clippers, blades, shears, brushes, and dryers
  • Animal safety: continuously monitor pets for signs of discomfort, illness, or injury and report concerns promptly
  • Individualized care: evaluate each pet's coat type, skin conditions, and temperament before and during grooming
  • Customer engagement: address grooming-related inquiries, offer tailored recommendations, and resolve concerns professionally
  • Client education: guide pet parents on maintenance practices and product selections for at-home care
  • Salon sanitation: disinfect tools, sanitize equipment, and perform daily and weekly cleaning duties per Petco hygiene policies
  • Team support: train and supervise entry-level trainees when the Grooming Salon Leader is absent
Qualifications & Experience
  • Completion of Petco's Pet Stylist Apprentice program or prior professional grooming experience or completion of a recognized technical grooming training program
  • Expert knowledge of dog breeds, grooming requirements, common health issues, and behavioral traits
  • High proficiency in breed-specific cuts, styling techniques, and industry grooming standards
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with pet parents and salon teammates
  • Ability to handle pets of all sizes and temperaments with patience and empathy
  • Availability for weekends, evenings, and holidays as the grooming schedule demands
  • Physical capability: bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for extended periods
What Petco Provides
  • Competitive base pay
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) plan
  • Paid Time Off
  • Employee discounts on Petco products
  • All grooming supplies and equipment included — brushes, nail trimmers, clippers, blades, shampoos, sprays, and tools
  • State-of-the-art salon equipment: bathing systems, kennels, tables, and dryers
  • Career advancement pathways such as Grooming Salon Leader, Grooming Mentor, and Grooming Instructor
Application Tips for Aspiring Pet Stylists
  • Showcase breed-specific work: Build a portfolio or Instagram highlighting various breed cuts you have completed — before-and-after photos demonstrate technical range and attention to detail
  • Highlight safety certifications: If you hold Pet CPR or animal handling certifications, feature them prominently;
Petco prioritizes pet well-being above all else
  • Reference relevant tools: Mention specific clipper brands (Andis, Oster, Wahl) and blade systems you are proficient with — this signals readiness to work without extensive onboarding
  • Demonstrate client communication: Prepare examples of how you have educated pet owners on coat maintenance between visits; this is a core daily responsibility in the salon
  • Leverage grooming networks: Beyond Linked In, consider platforms like Groomers Network or Pet Sitters International to build industry connections that can strengthen your application
  • Address temperament handling: Be ready to discuss how you manage anxious, aggressive, or senior pets — this sets experienced groomers apart from entry-level candidates

This role is ideal for groomers with proven technical experience who want to grow their productivity and expertise within a structured, supportive salon environment. The Final date to receive applications is December 3, 2026
