Building Maintenance, Maintenance Worker
The purpose of this classification is to train to perform skilled work involving the operation, repair and maintenance of the City of Miami Beach's water distribution system. Employees in this classification assist to ensure safe working conditions, maintain water flow, and test the water supply. Position reports to the Water Field Supervisor.
The following duties are to be learned in this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Install pipes and fittings, install new service line taps and tees, install valves, re-route mains and services.
- Repair breaks in main and service lines; repair pressure regulating and altitude valves.
- Perform distribution system flush outs and inspect water lines.
- Locate water mains for other utilities.
- Complete asphalt road repairs in accordance with City of Miami Beach standards.
- Complete concrete sidewalk restoration in accordance with City of Miami Beach standards.
- Maintain pump stations, and water storage tanks.
- Performs chemical tests involving chlorine residuals, water quality testing sampling, and conducts leak surveys.
- Operate heavy equipment and tools.
- Build meter vaults, raise and lower meter/valve boxes, relocate meters.
- Install, repair and maintain hydrants.
- Read and understand area maps.
- Review and maintain inventory of spare parts and perform small equipment maintenance.
- Prepares or receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the general public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, and review status of work, exchanges information, or resolves problems.
- Sets up maintenance of traffic (M.O.T.) around job site to ensure safety and monitors traffic conditions. Monitors work site to ensure safe working procedures are followed.
- High school diploma or GED, and a demonstrated desire to serve the public.
- Must obtain and maintain a FDEP Level 3 distribution license or at minimum Florida Class "C" WTPO license or higher within 18 months of employment to remain employed with the City of Miami Beach.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s) within 12 months of employment to remain employed with the City of Miami Beach.
- This position is subject to random drug/alcohol testing as required under the Federal Department of Transportation's Random Testing for CDL drivers.
- Must be able to communicate and comprehend the English language.
- This position is a trainee position and promotion to Water Distribution System Operator C is required within 18 months to remain employed with the City of Miami Beach.
- Shift work includes nights, weekends, and holidays
- Physical Ability:
Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). - Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. All tasks require the ability to communicate orally. - Environmental Factors:
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as confined space, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, operating machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards or toxic agents.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, coworkers, the press the general public and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, gender identity or sexual orientation.
- Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of all city ethics and conflicts of interest policies. Strong understanding of ethical behavior is required.
- Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Performs related work as required.
- Reports to work as directed during an emergency as an essential employee of the City of Miami Beach.
- Ability to develop innovative and creative solutions to issues consistent with the City's strategic plan.
