The Person al Support Worker provides personal care and performs selected tasks within their knowledge and skill under the direction of a supervisor while adhering to regulatory standards and Extendicare's policies, procedures, and quality of care.
Key Responsibilities- Adhere to the plan of care as determined by the supervisor.
- Facilitate residents' move‑in and transfers where applicable.
- Observe and report on residents/clients' care and service utilizing appropriate Extendicare forms or tools.
- Assist the resident/client with personal care and hygiene and activities of daily living.
- Observe and report on changes in residents' or clients' condition to supervisor.
- Escalate medical emergencies to supervisor or emergency medical services as appropriate.
- Plan and prepare nutritious meals as required.
- Assist with ambulation, mobilization, transferring, and use of adaptive aids.
- Demonstrate understanding of resident/client needs and maximize their abilities.
- Provide cognitive, social, emotional, and psychological support to the resident/client/family.
- Maintain resident/client information confidentiality.
- Respond to resident/client/family concerns and ensure appropriate action is taken within decision‑making authority or communicate concerns to supervisor.
- Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment, including residents/clients equipment, belongings, and nursing equipment.
- Observe and report to the Client Service Supervisor any concerns regarding client safety, implement interventions as directed, and advocate on the client's behalf.
- Engage with other agencies involved in resident/client care as directed.
- Attend in‑services to develop knowledge and skills.
- Work in a position of trust with vulnerable adults (residents).
- Uphold and promote the organization's values and philosophy regarding ethics, morality, and integrity as set out in Extendicare's Code of Conduct.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
- Graduate of a Personal Support Worker program (or provincial equivalent with a minimum of 600 hours in Ontario & Alberta of theory & practicum).
- Experience working with seniors in community health services.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated organizational and time‑management skills.
- Strong interpersonal and customer‑focus skills.
- Sound knowledge of providing personal care duties.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support and First Aid certification required.
- Ability to perform tasks such as lifting and transferring clients.
- Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one.
