Recreation Aide; Summer

Overview

Employees in this position are responsible for supervising children in various settings during the summer camp program and special events. The role requires creating a safe, enriching environment for youth, meeting the general public, and following departmental policies and procedures. Work may be performed under adverse weather conditions and may include light to moderate custodial tasks to maintain public parks, playgrounds, sports fields, courts, and concession areas.

• Deliver superior customer service to program participants and the public.
• Maintain effective internal and external customer relationships.
• Organize and lead age‑group recreation activities, including enrichment activities, culinary arts, science projects, traditional indoor and outdoor activities, and special events assigned by the Recreation District Supervisor.
• Implement summer activities within the park and recreation center manual.
• Collaborate with other Recreation Aides during pool activities, trips, and special projects.
• Ensure the safety and participation of all children.
• Interact with employees, program participants, supervisors, contractors, professionals, and the public.
• Perform custodial work as needed and maintain cleanliness of buildings, courts, restrooms, playgrounds, and other areas.
• Assist with the Youth Football Program.
• Report accidents and incidents clearly and concisely.
• Render basic first aid.
• Perform related duties as required.

• Knowledge of community recreational activities and program design and implementation.
• Experience working with children and knowledge of grounds and building maintenance techniques.
• Ability to respond to parent and resident requests with concise information about facilities, trips, activities, and schedules.
• Ability to provide enrichment activities and work effectively with employees on programs and special projects.
• Ability to give information regarding park facilities, regulations, and ensure safety and welfare of children and residents.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions for contractors and provide additional services.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Minimum of 1 year of related experience working with children, preferably in a summer camp environment; or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
• First Aid/CPR preferred; knowledge of recreational programs, camp counseling, athletics, cash handling, and child care preferred.
• 10 months experience in light grounds maintenance preferred.
• Valid Florida driver’s license with satisfactory driving history.
• Valid fingerprint and VEC background check required.

Essential functions include frequent walking, sitting, talking or hearing, using hands and arms to handle objects, tools, and controls, occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds is required. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, and adjustment of focus. Work may occur in outdoor weather conditions and under wet or humid conditions.

Noise levels are usually quiet in the office and moderately loud in parks. Use of standard office equipment and recreation equipment is expected.
