We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly motivated Assistant Controller with experience in the retail industry to support our growing finance and accounting team. The Assistant Controller will play a critical role in managing day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, and supporting the Controller with key financial projects. This position requires strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of accounting principles, and a hands‑on approach to problem‑solving in a dynamic retail environment.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in overseeing the daily operations of the accounting department, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
- Support the month‑end and year‑end closing processes, ensuring accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
- Collaborate with the retail operations team to analyze store performance, margins, inventory management, and cost control.
- Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Assist with the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis, providing insights into financial performance.
- Ensure compliance with internal financial policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Help with the preparation and coordination of external audits and provide necessary documentation to auditors.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and procedures to enhance operational efficiency.
- Act as a key point of contact for internal teams and external vendors regarding financial inquiries.
- Assist in mentoring and developing junior accounting staff.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in accounting, with at least 2 years in the retail industry.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and retail‑specific accounting practices (e.g., inventory accounting, sales reporting).
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Quick Books, Net Suite, or similar systems).
- Solid understanding of financial statements, budgeting, and forecasting processes.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and other financial reporting tools.
- Experience working in a multi‑location retail environment.
- Knowledge of retail metrics such as gross margin, inventory turnover, and sales trends.
- Previous experience with retail point‑of‑sale (POS) systems.
