Position OverviewImmediate hire of a Building Permit Technician who is highly motivated, detail‑oriented, and a team player. Primary duties include assisting homeowners, contractors, and others applying for building permits with routine and technical information related to the issuance of building permits, reviewing applications and required documentation, and providing customer service for the public.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide information and guidance to the general public regarding application procedures for all types of building permits.
- Review permit applications for required information and documentation.
- Distribute applications for necessary reviews.
- Monitor progress of permit review.
- Verify completion of all required reviews and notify applicant of approved permit.
- Serve as liaison between reviewing agencies and applicant.
- Perform specialized processing functions for permits.
- Serve as special liaison with high volume customers.
- Track permits through inspection process and advise customers of status, problems, and final approval.
- Maintain building permit packets with detailed files of official records.
- Address public records requests.
- Answer phones and assist customers at the counter.
- Handle customer questions and issues regarding permit requirements; refer technical questions to appropriate staff and advise customer of action taken as necessary.
- May include image documents using small and large‑format scanners.
- Maintain confidentiality of records.
- May be assigned to other office locations based upon operational needs.
- Attend work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Perform other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned.
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED and three (3) years of general clerical experience, including a minimum of two (2) years in strong customer service. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience with related job skills may be substituted for the minimum requirements. The preferred candidate will have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in construction, building, or permitting.
Experience working with permitting software is a plus.
- Knowledge of basic land development and construction permit requirements.
- Knowledge of general permit processing and procedures.
- Knowledge of county offices and functions.
- Knowledge of land development and construction terminology.
- Able to deal with the public in a professional, courteous manner.
- Able to accurately answer questions and resolve problem situations or refer to appropriate office.
- Able to follow check lists and recognize different types of required exhibits and plans.
- Hands‑on experience with desktop computer applications.
- Skilled in the use of various office equipment.
- Able to work under stressful conditions.
- Able to interact effectively with others.
- Must be able to commute to other office locations as required.
Primarily sedentary work requiring sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, and standing. Able to move about an office and lift and carry up to 10 pounds. Able to look at a computer screen for long periods and operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement. Able to speak, hear, and see. Finger dexterity. Visual acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception) to operate motorized vehicles.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment is primarily inside the office. Ability to perform shop math (fractions, percentages, ratios, multiplication, subtraction, division) and read and comprehend instructions, reports, permits, applications. Ability to speak clearly and concisely and write detailed information in clear and proper English.
