Job SummaryThe Principal Architect is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the design and delivery of large-scale and complex architectural projects. This position provides expert-level guidance in design and technical oversight while steering the strategic direction of projects. The Principal Architect also plays a key role in business development, client engagement, and mentoring junior staff.
Primary Essential Functions- Lead the design and technical development of large-scale and complex architectural projects, from conceptual design through construction documentation and administration.
- Provide expert-level technical guidance and ensure that all designs adhere to regulatory standards, codes, and sustainability requirements.
- Oversee the creation and review of detailed construction documents, including drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Serve as the primary client liaison on high-profile projects, ensuring that client expectations are met or exceeded.
- Manage the integration of various building systems, such as structural, mechanical, and electrical, into architectural designs, coordinating with consultants to ensure seamless execution.
- Lead and mentor design teams, providing technical expertise and ensuring that junior architects and designers are developing their skills and knowledge.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, and industry partners, actively participating in business development and marketing initiatives.
- Oversee project budgets and schedules, ensuring that projects are completed on time and within financial constraints while maintaining high standards of quality.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including building codes, zoning laws, and environmental requirements, and manage the necessary permitting processes.
- Participate in strategic planning for the firm, contributing to decisions about market positioning, service offerings, and long-term goals.
- Collaborate with internal teams to develop proposals, respond to RFPs, and create presentations that highlight the expertise and capabilities.
- Lead quality control efforts, ensuring that all project deliverables meet or exceed the firm’s standards for design excellence and technical accuracy.
- Engage in post-occupancy evaluations to assess the success of completed projects and implement lessons learned into future projects.
- Represent the firm at industry conferences, seminars, and events, building the firm’s reputation and visibility within the architecture community.
- Stay current with advancements in architectural design, technology, and materials, integrating new methods and technologies into the firm’s design practice.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Work collaboratively and effectively with clients and colleagues, including cross-functional teams, peers, direct reports, and leadership, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
- Adapt to changing business needs and priorities, demonstrating flexibility in taking on new responsibilities and adjusting to evolving challenges.
- Extensive knowledge of architectural design principles, theories, and practices, with a focus on large and complex projects.
- Deep understanding of construction methods, building systems, and materials, as well as their integration into architectural designs.
- Familiarity with building codes, zoning regulations, and sustainability standards (LEED, WELL, etc.).
- Knowledge of project management principles, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.
- Understanding of business development strategies and client relationship management.
- Proficiency in architectural design software, including Revit, AutoCAD, and 3D modeling tools.
- Strong leadership skills for guiding and mentoring multidisciplinary teams.
- Advanced problem‑solving skills for addressing complex design and technical challenges.
- Excellent communication skills for leading client discussions, presentations, and negotiations.
