Miami Country Day School seeks an innovative, collaborative, and experienced academic leader to serve as Chair of the Math, Science & Technology (MST) Department. The Chair will lead a dynamic team of 20+ educators across grades 6–12, champion interdisciplinary STEM learning, and help shape the evolution of teaching and learning in alignment with the school’s mission and strategic vision.
As MCDS undertakes a process of evaluating its academic organizational structures, this position is intentionally designed with flexibility in mind. While the Chair will assume core departmental leadership responsibilities in the first year, the scope and structure of the role may evolve in subsequent years to align with emerging priorities, new leadership models, and the outcomes of the school’s strategic planning.

Essential Functions & Tasks- Provides vision and leadership for the MST Department, ensuring alignment with the school’s mission and evolving strategic goals.
- Advocates for STEM innovation and pedagogical excellence across middle and upper school programs.
- Promotes interdisciplinary connections within MST and across other academic domains.
- Serves as a full member of academic leadership committees as assigned.
- Supports teachers in designing engaging, inquiry‑based, student‑centered learning experiences.
- Remains current with standards and frameworks (e.g., Next Generation Science Standards, NCTM, ISTE) and facilitates professional learning for faculty.
- Participates in the evaluation and placement of students in MST courses.
- Provides supportive, growth‑oriented supervision for MST faculty, including observations, feedback, and annual performance reviews.
- Leads an effective and collaborative departmental culture grounded in trust, professionalism, and shared purpose.
- Manages departmental budget, resources, safety protocols, and procurement of instructional materials.
- Plans teaching assignments and staffing in collaboration with academic leadership to ensure effective allocation of resources.
- Teaches one course within mathematics, science, or technology (ideally spanning both middle and upper school).
- Serves as an advisor in the Middle or Upper School.
- Builds strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Bachelor’s Degree with minimum five years of exemplary classroom teaching experience in a STEM discipline.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in curriculum development, coaching, or academic administration.
- Deep understanding of inquiry‑based and student‑centered pedagogies.
- Commitment to integrating technology and emerging tools into teaching and learning.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to lead with empathy, clarity, and sound judgment.
