Metallurgist – U.S. Pipe
Location: Birmingham, Alabama (relocation required)
About the RoleU.S. Pipe and Foundry is seeking talent to join our Engineering Team as a Metallurgist. This position provides technical guidance to Operations in melting, casting and heat treatment for the production and processing of ductile iron pipe.
Specific Responsibilities- Involved in all phases of the iron melting, processing, holding and casting operations.
- Providing input on alloy selection, raw material inspection, storage and usage, refractory selection, application and use.
- Delivering iron with close temperature and chemical composition tolerances at or below budgeted cost.
- Conducting chemical analysis techniques and determining the proper metallic mix for melting and proper alloy additions.
- Overseeing all phases of the casting process including mold condition, machine condition, machine set‑up, alloy additions and pipe handling.
- Overseeing all phases of the annealing process including temperature control, oven variables, and oven condition.
- Reviewing operating reports, evaluating cost data, quantity of pipe produced, defectives, etc., to determine corrective actions needed.
- Working closely with Operations personnel to discuss problems and recommend solutions.
- Taking corrective actions as required.
- Evaluating new alloys and materials; developing new processes and procedures and training on their use.
- Recommending and explaining benefits of new technology to plant management for evaluation.
- Assisting in training on the technical aspects of the processes in use.
- Performing other related duties as required.
- College graduate with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science, or five to seven years’ experience applying this knowledge to supervision, safety, technical know‑how and labor relations.
- Familiarity with coreless and channel electric melting processes.
- Experience interpreting the metallography of iron to determine compliance with process parameters and required changes; assessing weld quality and other issues.
- Ability to train on metallurgical aspects of the operations.
- Knowledge and training sufficient to provide a working knowledge of regulations, practices, specifications and procedures related to the operations.
- Strong communication skills within the technology domain.
- Understanding of cost data, specifically related to the melting operation and the plant as a whole.
- Will work in an office environment but will walk through the plant regularly, exposing to foundry operations.
- Exposure to extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration, oils, dust, fumes and metallic particles.
- Regular actions: standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing, sitting; majority standing and walking.
