Position: Field Technician I

Field Technician I – Universal Engineering Sciences

We are seeking a motivated and hands‑on Field Technician I to support engineering and virtual design consultation projects. The role includes frequent travel to job sites and offers opportunities for growth, technical training, and career advancement in a dynamic industry.

Position Overview

As a Field Technician I, you will work alongside experienced professionals, gaining practical field experience, developing technical skills, and contributing to critical projects that impact communities. This position requires frequent travel, strong safety focus, and the ability to thrive in outdoor work environments.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with clients and colleagues to manage and execute private utility locates, concrete scanning, geophysical investigations, laser scans and similar services.
  • Coordinate and manage above- and below‑ground projects involving geophysics, surveying, 3D laser scanning, and structures evaluation.
  • Develop and manage client and contractor relationships for assigned projects.
  • Map and model subsurface and building information.
  • Conduct Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) tasks.
  • Provide project assistance, support, and execution of construction, geotechnical, and environmental services as needed (e.g., boring layout, utility clearing, soil classification, hand augers, bedrock analyses, drilling).
  • Communicate daily with site contractors, other industry professionals, and project managers verbally and electronically.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with clients to manage expectations, address issues, and ensure satisfaction.
  • Review reports and client documentation; ensure timely submission of project deliverables.
  • Ensure all activities adhere to company safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in cross‑functional collaboration with engineering, laboratory, safety, and operational teams.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with CAD, GIS, and mapping software.
  • Geology field work, geophysics, or civil engineering experience with knowledge of construction, geotechnical and/or environmental services.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials testing standards (ASTM, AASHTO, etc.) and ability to interpret technical specifications.
  • Preferred: NULCA accreditation; knowledge of SUE (ASCE 38‑02, ASCE 38‑22); experience with survey equipment, laser scanner, GNSS, and total station.
  • Prior project‑management experience is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and industry‑specific platforms (project management, data reporting systems).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents and maps; to accurately complete field‑testing paperwork and detailed figures.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills; ability to work proactively and independently.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites and work in diverse environmental conditions.
Travel Requirements

Extensive travel (up to 70% of the time) to support business objectives and client engagements. Travel may be scheduled or on short notice. Destinations include job sites, field locations, or regional offices.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Typical workdays Monday‑Friday; weekend/overtime/overnight work may occur.
  • Job site locations may require up to 50–60% overnight and out‑of‑town travel; driving up to hundreds of miles per day within Florida.
  • Approximately 30% of time in an office/remote environment, 70% in the field.
  • Hybrid work environment requiring flexibility to work effectively from both an office and work site.
On‑Site Office Requirements

Work is performed at a desk for extended periods using a computer, phone, and standard office equipment in a climate‑controlled environment. Regular in‑person communication with team members and clients is required. Physical demands may include sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting of materials.

Physical Requirements
  • Lift and carry up to 80 lbs. of equipment.
  • Bend, twist, reach, stoop, kneel, climb, and balance as needed.
  • Use sensory capabilities (vision, smell) for observation and safety.
