The Safety Engineer exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities at least 25% of the time. This includes planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting and adjusting short- and long-term priorities, and preparing schedules for work completion. The incumbent assigns work based on priorities, considering the difficulty and requirements of assignments and the capabilities of employees. They also evaluate subordinates' work performance, provide advice, counsel, and instruction on both work-related and administrative matters, interview candidates, and recommend appointments, promotions, or reassignments.

The incumbent addresses and resolves employee complaints, escalating group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to a higher-level supervisor or manager. They administer minor disciplinary measures, such as warnings and reprimands, and recommend further action in more serious cases. Identifying developmental and training needs of employees is also a key responsibility, along with providing or arranging for necessary development and training.

The incumbent performs System Safety Engineering duties on specifically assigned major or sensitive programs or projects. This includes conducting safety assessments of space and missile system designs, procedures, and supporting safety documentation to determine the acceptability or deficiency of assigned programs or projects. The incumbent applies System Safety principles and requirements to developing space-related programs/projects to maximize overall safety for the program or project and its related workforce, ensuring mission success without compromising the protection of life, limb, and resources.

For projects extending beyond the current applicability of known safety requirements, the incumbent performs special studies or analyses to ensure the integration of basic tenets of system safety into the evolving technology and methodology of the specific project. They also provide briefings to management to ensure that project evolution maintains the safety principles and expectations of the USAF/USSF Command Safety responsibilities.

As required, the incumbent performs professional Safety Investigation Board duties for space and missile system/program mishaps or launch failures, prepares and submits written reports of investigation causes and findings, and provides recommendations to preclude the recurrence of circumstances that led to the event.

The incumbent functions as the primary professional and SLD safety consultant to senior USAF/USSF command management, corporate aerospace industry management, professional and national industry representational organizations, and local contractor safety organizations. During periods of inordinate conflicting situations regarding program risk, the incumbent serves as the primary safety advocate to ensure top management is fully and accurately informed regarding hazards in the decision-making process for refraining from or proceeding with launch processing.

Utilizing System Safety principles, published guidance, and persuasion, the incumbent develops new/improved local safety policy, applications, interpretations, and precedent-setting requirements in response to the changing environment and technology of space and missile systems. They coordinate these changes throughout the local and sister Range communities to obtain maximum concurrence and comprehension to support changing space and missile safety complexities. The incumbent uses experience and understanding to develop and shape innovative approaches to space and missile system safety implementation and attends professional seminars and presentations to influence and/or gain understanding for maintaining system safety science and art as a critical element of space and missile operations.
