Summary

Pharmacy Technician I works under the direct supervision of licensed pharmacists providing assistance in compounding (sterile and non-sterile preparations), distribution and dispensing of medication and other pharmaceutical related supplies.

Responsibilities
  • Replenishes automated drug distribution machines following standard procedures.
  • Troubleshoots problems related to the operation of the automated drug distribution machines.
  • Forwards concerns that cannot be corrected to the appropriate individual in a timely manner.
  • Prepares sterile products (add-a-vials, syringes, IV Admixtures, chemotherapy, large volume parenteral) following standard procedures and under supervision and check of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Assures all quality related procedures are followed.
  • Inputs information into the Hospital's inpatient pharmacy clinical information management system as requested.
  • Ensures required medications and supplies are dispensed following established procedures where no point‑of‑care automated dispensing equipment is available.
  • Performs extemporaneous compounding and prepackaging under pharmacy policy and supervision.
  • Orders and receives medication inventory; rotates stock and checks expiration dates routinely.
  • Follows all established procedures to assure the quality and security of medication assets.
  • Maintains assigned area neat, clean, orderly.
  • Assembles, tabulates, and analyzes quality improvement data when requested.
  • Assists in reports and survey tabulation when requested.
  • Performs monthly patient care center reviews as assigned.
  • Enters data into the specialized computer system as needed.
  • Attends orientation, continuing education, and training courses to maintain competency.
  • Participates in required educational programs including HIS, safety, infection control, AIDS awareness, age‑related special needs behaviors, etc.
  • Ensures a pharmacist checks each preparation prior to dispensing.
  • Consults with a pharmacist or supervisor when necessary and as per Florida Statutes when making exceptions.
  • Refers clinical questions to a pharmacist.
  • Demonstrates service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
Experience

Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

High School diploma is required.

Skills

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines; communicate effectively orally and in writing; handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure; understand and follow instructions; knowledge of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current unit specific and organizational competencies, certifications/licensures.

Credentials

Must hold a Registered Pharmacy Technician license (RPT) and be CPHT certified or hold a Pharmacist Intern license (PSI).

Physical Requirements
  • Job function requires extended standing or walking.
  • Must carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds.
  • Can lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with appropriate devices.
  • Requires frequent visual acuity for extended computer use.

Environmental Conditions
  • Fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent situations.
