The School Health Social Worker serves as a liaison between the home, school, and community to support students’ academic success, emotional well‑being, and social development. They assess student needs and provide individual, group, and family counseling. They collaborate with school staff, families, and external agencies to address barriers to physical and mental health. Responsibilities include crisis intervention, counseling services, prevention and intervention services, assessments, case management, and advocacy for students and families.

They support students experiencing trauma, mental health issues, or family challenges and promote a safe school environment.

• Conduct psychosocial assessments, behavioral measurements, and classroom observations. Develop intervention plans tailored to student and family needs, and implement evidence‑based therapeutic techniques to address issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma or family difficulties.
• Effectively manage caseload while prioritizing cases based on urgency and impact.
• Participate in departmental or hospital projects/activities, committees, initiatives, and support/educational groups.
• Take lead on trauma, child abuse, and domestic violence cases; report cases to appropriate community agencies per hospital and MDCPS policies.
• Provide individual, group, and family counseling to address academic, emotional, behavioral, and social challenges impacting student performance and well‑being.
• Collaborate with teachers, school staff, and families to support students’ academic and emotional success.
• Provide crisis intervention, including de‑escalation, assessment, and recommendations in alignment with MDCPS and hospital’s Baker Act protocols.
• Follow up with students and families regarding results from school‑wide or grade‑wide depressive screeners when risk is identified, and provide appropriate referrals, support, and intervention.
• Serve as liaison between school, families, and community agencies to coordinate services and resources.
• Follow up on referrals from school staff in a timely manner, ensuring communication and coordination of services between social work and school personnel.
• Deliver school‑wide preventive education to students, staff, and parents on topics such as mental health, social media risks, bullying, and emotional regulation.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of services provided using designated electronic health record system in compliance with federal, state, and hospital guidelines.
• Promote culturally responsive practices and demonstrate knowledge of diverse cultural and religious perspectives.
• Uphold professional ethics and confidentiality in accordance with laws, regulations, hospital and school policies.

• Master’s Degree in Mental Health related field or Social Work
• American Heart Association BLS – maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
• American Heart Association First Aid – maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
• Level II Background Check
• 1–3 years of experience in a pediatric health care related setting

• Expertise in crisis intervention and risk assessment preferred.
• Expertise in pediatric growth and development preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to adapt and react calmly in stressful situations.
• Strong patient and family advocacy skills.
• Expertise in coordinating and facilitating support groups.
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information and adheres to HIPAA guidelines.
• Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of various therapeutic interventions, including but not limited to Family Systems Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma‑informed therapy, Strength‑Based approaches and Solution‑Focused techniques.
• Knowledge of diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds and how this perspective influences behavior, family dynamic, and community interaction.
• Knowledge of State of Florida laws regarding child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, and Baker Act procedures.
• Ability to uphold and maintain confidentiality and ethical standards in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA, and NASW code of ethics, ensuring privacy and protection of all patient and family information.
