The UHealth Laboratory/Pathology Department at UHealth/University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a full‑time Lead Histotechnologist to work at the UTower Hospital.

Job SummaryThe Histotechnologist - Lead oversees the performance of proper collection, grossing, processing, and embedding of routine and non‑routine specimens and specimens submitted for electron microscopy, as well as a wide variety of routine, histochemical, and immunohistochemical stains (IHC) on surgical tissue specimens for use in treatment and/or diagnosis of disease. The incumbent participates and facilitates patient data accessioning via the laboratory information system (LIS), quality control, quality assurance, instrument maintenance, instrument troubleshooting, and technical validations.
CoreJob Functions
- Prepare routine and non‑routine surgical specimens for morphological and immunohistochemical (IHC, ISH, IF) microscopic analyses by pathologist(s) in accordance with established policies and SOPs in a timely and efficient manner.
- Maintain records of prepared specimens and cross‑check all labels and patient documentation. Verify identification of specimen with pathologist’s orders, prepare specimens for testing, and handle all specimens in a safe and careful manner.
- Conduct, direct, or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection, and implementation.
- Recognize factors that affect all steps of specimen processing and recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable results during each step.
- Follow up according to established protocols.
- Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform preventive maintenance, verifications, and calibrations as applicable.
- Troubleshoot minor equipment failures and document remedial actions (e.g., repairs or repeated tests).
- Perform, verify, and record quality control testing according to procedure.
- Ensure all quality control and quality assurance standards are met.
- Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and act as outlined by established protocols.
- Use reagents and supplies in a cost‑effective manner; monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.
- Place supply inventory orders as needed.
- Follow all safety precautions and regulatory rules to safeguard patient confidentiality. Provide training and guidance to new employees, students, and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. - Certification and Licensing:
Current Florida Medical Technologist License Histotechnologist. - Minimum 5 Years Of Relevant Experience.

- Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

- Leadership and Oversight:
Oversee daily operations and workflow of the histology laboratory; assign and prioritize work to ensure timely turnaround; serve as technical resource and mentor for all histotechnologist levels. - Quality Assurance and Control:
Maintain overall quality, consistency, and completeness of slides and blocks; monitor compliance with CAP, CLIA, and institutional standards; maintain QC documentation and participate in audits. - Compliance:
Ensure adherence to all laboratory safety and regulatory standards; assist management in internal audits; collect laboratory metrics for Lab Management.
