Histotechnologist 3 – Day Shift
Location: University of Miami – UTower Hospital, Pathology Department
Shift: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday‑Friday
Sign‑On Bonus: $5,000
Job Summary: The Histotechnologist 3 (H) prepares tissues from surgical specimens for histology, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry. The incumbent utilizes laboratory and hospital systems to accession data and perform other appropriate system functions.
Core Job Functions- Prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examinations and handles the more complex jobs involving immunohistochemistry for clinical patient diagnosis.
- Maintains and reviews quality control in assigned laboratory facilities.
- Determines the acceptability of testing results and instrument function.
- Maintains all equipment and places orders for reagents and materials.
- Maintains records of samples including sample accessioning and paraffin block and slide files. Follows specimen handling and processing procedures.
- Participates in the formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
- Provides guidance and leadership to employees within assigned section. Makes recommendations for improvement of laboratory functions.
- Handles clinical and patient concerns in a confidential manner employing integrity and discretion.
- Identifies and resolves problems with equipment and specimen integrity. Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
- Education: Associate’s degree in a relevant field.
- Certification & Licensing: Current Florida Medical Technologist License, Histotechnologist.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.

- Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

- Specimen Receiving:
- Verify that the patient’s name on the specimen container matches the accompanying documentation.
- Assign and record surgical numbers accurately.
- Place specimens in properly labeled cassettes according to established procedures.
- Specimen Processing:
- Change processing solutions daily as outlined in the laboratory procedure manual.
- Monitor and document processing times and ensure correct tissue processing schedules are followed.
- Verify and record paraffin temperature settings to maintain optimal performance.
