Job Summary

Responsible for assisting with patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse and performs one-on-ones with behavioral health patients to support patient's needs. Accountable for patient care, which incorporates clinical and clerical tasks, planning and implementation, evaluation, and intervention skills. Also responsible for the maintenance, stocking of the rooms during shift, and upkeep of the department and equipment and supplies. Works under the supervision of the Nurse Director and/or Manager.

Job

Specific Duties
  • Provides care to patients under the direction of the RN including: taking vitals, collecting & delivering specimens to the laboratory, performing EKG, and assisting in medical procedure.
  • Provides care to patients under the direction of the RN including: assisting with ventilation, performing CPR, communicating with arriving cases, setting up all monitors, & checklist completion.
  • Conducts walking rounds with RN or LPN to ensure proper bedside handoff and continuity of patient care.
  • Prepares for all specimen handling within hospital guidelines and policy. Ensures proper handoff per emergency guidelines and delivery of specimens.
  • Checks and assembles supplies, linens and equipment for assigned areas, to promote an efficient and safe environment of care.
  • Collaboratively works with RN and LPN to prioritize patient care needs throughout the entire shift.
  • Prepares discharge paperwork and includes school notes to patients and families.
  • Provides point of care testing with documentation of results in EMR.
  • Actively supports patients by transporting to areas within the hospital for procedures and admissions.
  • Promotes safety by actively participating in the "Time Out" process with the medical and clinical staff.
  • Accurately performs & records all POC quality controls; documents department refrigerator temperature controls that align to Quality control standards per departmental protocol.
  • Documents significant occurrences, observed behaviors, I &O (if ordered), and observation findings in patient charts and reports to RN.
  • Communicates patient’s behavior to patient care and medical teams. Reports any significant changes in patient condition or behavior to RN.
  • Employs therapeutic sensitivity and skills in managing inappropriate patient behavior, difficult people, and complex situations.
  • Completes documentation and reports accurately and thoroughly on a timely basis (includes patient teaching, 15 minute observations).
  • Reports patient/family complaints and/or allegations of abuse/neglect by staff to nurse and leaders.
  • Provides continuous supervision and observation of patient activities.
  • Provides continuous supervision, observation of behavioral health patients, and adheres to non-violent crisis intervention strategies (CPI).
  • Provides support on an as needed basis to Life Flight as a driver for the Life Flight ambulances.
Qualifications
  • EMT - Emergency Medical Technician maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • CPR BLS
    -American Heart Association BLS maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • CPI - Crisis Prevention Institute within 45 days of hire
  • PALS - American Heart Association PALS within 2 years of hire
  • BACKGRD - Level II Background Check
  • Completes basic hours of orientation, plus 12 hours of in-service training within 1 year of hire
  • EVOC - Emergency Vehicle Operator required within 30 days of hire (Current employees will have until 11/14/25 to obtain EVOC)
  • DL - Driver's License Class E (Current employees will have until 11/14/25 to obtain DL)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Prior experience working with children and/or adolescents preferred
  • ACLS within 1 year of hire and in good standing throughout employment preferred
  • Able to relate cooperatively and constructively with clients and co-workers
  • Able to complete basic competency list and specialized skills list for position
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Ability to problem solve to adapt standard nursing procedures to the individual client need
  • Ability to interpret, adapt to, and react calmly under stressful conditions
  • Ability to be flexible and handle reprioritization of patient needs frequently throughout the day
