Systems Engineer, Systems Administrator, Unix/Linux, Cloud Computing: Infrastructure & Operations
We are seeking a Systems & Dev Ops Engineer to work remotely in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale with some office visits (3-4 days a month) to manage, secure, and scale our bare-metal infrastructure and database stack. Unlike typical public cloud setups, our platform relies on co-located hardware running FreeBSD, leveraging ZFS for high-performance storage and FreeBSD Jails for system containerization.
In this role, you will be responsible for our end-to-end Unix environment, network security via PF, high-availability MySQL InnoDB Clusters, and edge routing with HAProxy, Nginx, and Redis. You will blend deep Unix systems administration, database performance tuning, and automation to maintain an exceptionally stable and secure platform.
Key Responsibilities- FreeBSD & Containerization:
Manage, configure, and automate the deployment of production workloads inside FreeBSD Jails. Maintain system isolation, resource limits, and OS upgrading workflows. - ZFS Storage Management:
Manage ZFS pools (zpools), datasets, snapshots, replication pipelines, ARC memory tuning, and data integrity checks across co-located bare-metal servers. - MySQL Database Administration:
Support and optimize our high-availability multi-node native MySQL InnoDB Cluster. Perform query optimization, indexing, buffer pool tuning, and failover validation. - Edge & Web Application Stack:
Configure, monitor, and tune HAProxy for high-availability load balancing, Nginx for reverse proxying and web serving, and Redis for caching and session management. - Network Administration & Security:
Configure and monitor co-located networking equipment. Manage edge firewalls, packet filtering, and network isolation using PF (Packet Filter). - System Architecture & Maintenance:
Design resilient bare-metal architectures, perform kernel and package updates across the FreeBSD fleet, and manage server hardware (IPMI/iDRAC/iLO). - Troubleshooting & Optimization:
Diagnose complex performance bottlenecks across network, disk I/O (ZFS), memory, and database layers during live incidents. - Technical Documentation:
Author and maintain comprehensive system architecture diagrams, ZFS disaster recovery runbooks, network topologies, and standard operating procedures.
- FreeBSD Expertise:
Deep, hands-on administrative experience with production FreeBSD, FreeBSD Jails, and system startup/service management (rc.d). - ZFS Mastery:
Practical experience creating, tuning, monitoring, snapshotting, and restoring ZFS file systems on production hardware. - MySQL InnoDB Cluster:
Demonstrated experience managing and performance-tuning MySQL native InnoDB Clusters / Group Replication, including slow query analysis and schema optimization. - Network & Security (PF):
Solid understanding of enterprise networking (VLANs, routing, DNS) with direct experience configuring PF (Packet Filter) firewall rulesets. - Edge Stack
Experience:
Hands-on experience configuring and operating HAProxy, Nginx, and Redis in high-throughput production environments. - Scripting & Automation:
Strong shell scripting skills (sh/bash) or interpreted languages (Perl) for task automation and system monitoring. - Data Center / Hardware:
Familiarity with bare-metal server provisioning, hardware diagnostics, and co-location data center workflows. - Experience using FreeBSD virtualization with Jails (similar to Linux containers).
- Experience with configuration of network equipment, e.g. QSPF+ switches and network cards.
- Familiarity with Unix monitoring tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix, or FreeBSD-native utilities like systat, gstat, and zpool status).
