$67,665.00/yr - $87,970.00/yr

Summary

The Supervisory Medical Support Assistants (MSA) positions serve as the direct line supervisor for all Lead Medical Support Assistants – Advanced MSAs (AMSA) and Medical Support Assistants (MSA). This position is located within the Health Administration Service at the Bruce W. Carter VAMC. The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant has full administrative and professional responsibility for the planning and directing of the MSA daily activities.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience and

    Education:

    (1) Six months experience of clerical – office – customer service or other administrative work indicating the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.
  • OR – (2)

    Education:

    One year above high school.
  • OR – (3) Experience/Education Combination:
    Equivalent combination of experience and education qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
  • Foreign

    Education:

    Education completed outside the U.S. must be submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and must be deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs.
  • English Language Proficiency: MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 – Part II – Chapter 3 – Section A – paragraph 3.j.
  • Grandfathering Provision:
    Applies to current VHA employees who meet the criteria and are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title‑series‑and‑grade on the effective date of the qualification standard. Employees not meeting all basic requirements may be reassigned, promoted, or placed in a lower grade. Temporary appointees before the effective date may not have their appointment extended until they fully meet the basic requirements.
  • Grade Determinations – Supervisory MSA – GS‑8 experience:
    One year of experience equivalent to the GS‑7 grade level leading or supervising MSAs or equivalent administrative patient support staff in a non‑VA medical inpatient, outpatient, or interdisciplinary setting.
  • Supervisory MSA responsibilities: plan and direct programs at medical centers and/or satellite outpatient clinics; supervise at least one subordinate MSA team leader; evaluate staff work; resolve complex problems; evaluate new products/equipment; identify training needs; make final hiring decisions; evaluate performance and take disciplinary action; manage data and reports. These duties require significant scope and independence.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Administer full range of supervisory duties to at least one subordinate MSA supervisor or team leader.
  • Collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers to ensure quality of care and compliance with policies.
  • Provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training in a patient support setting.
  • Manage fiscal matters, forecast resources, and identify budget needs.
  • Advanced knowledge of managing or leading patient support staff in a clinic; use reference sources for decision making and empower team in complex systems.
  • Physical requirements:

    work is sedentary but also demands standing, walking, bending, twisting, and carrying light items.
