Overview
Inspects, maintains, and repairs locomotives in accordance with FRA regulations.
3rd Shift, 2300 - 0700, Days off Wednesday/Thursday
Initial pay between $27.35/hr – $30.77/hr based on experience. Salary will increase to $34.19/hr once qualified (typically 6‑12 months).
Responsibilities- Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.
- Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
- Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.
- Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
- Performs mechanical inspection on locomotives and repairs defects to conform to FRA regulations.
- Tests locomotives for performance by use of load box.
- Replaces brake shoes on locomotives.
- Disassembles and rebuilds locomotive trucks and replaces wheel sets and traction motors.
- Repairs and rebuilds diesel engines, air compressors, and many other locomotive components.
- Disassembles and reassembles locomotives and machinery.
Education and/or
Experience:
High School diploma/GED and one‑year certificate from college or technical school; or 4 years heavy mechanical repair experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience reading blueprints.
Language
Skills:
Ability to understand both verbal and written communications—both general and technical, and to write routine reports and correspondence.
Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Reasoning Ability: Problem‑solving and trouble‑shooting skills, mechanical aptitude, and ability to handle problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
Other
Skills and Abilities:
Qualified welder.
Licenses, Certificates, or Registrations: Current valid driver’s license.
Physical DemandsThe employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms; occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl; must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds; and must have close, distance, peripheral, and depth vision. Exposure to heat, fumes, airborne particles, and electrical shock may occur.
WorkEnvironment
Work environment includes frequent contact with moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, noise levels typically loud, and occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
Must have personal tools—a complete set of small hand tools up to and including ½" drive ratchet and socket set.
