Summary
  • The Nurse Midwife is responsible for continuous care and management of mothers and babies throughout the maternity cycle in the Nurse Midwife Service of a county medical facility.
  • Responsibilities include clinical, administrative, educational, and some research duties requiring licensure as a Registered Nurse Practitioner and registration with the State Department of Health as a Certified Nurse Midwife.
  • Employees exercise professional judgment to maintain high standards of therapeutic care and request medical assistance or early consultation when patients require complex nursing and obstetric procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Provide professional care for delivery‑related services.
  • Perform prenatal history, physical examinations, and complete prenatal care for normal obstetric patients.
  • Diagnose onset of labor and perform admission history and physical examinations of patients in labor.
  • Educate patient and family to support health adjustments to new or changing health patterns.
  • Provide consultation and proper hand‑off regarding the patient's therapeutic regimen to other healthcare team members.
  • Facilitate continuity of care across the continuum of services (home care, community referrals, other facilities, appointments with other providers or specialists).
  • Ensure complete and thorough documentation for all services rendered and plan and organize care to meet individual patient needs while ensuring appropriate clinical resource utilization.
  • Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to maintain timely and appropriate communication with patient, family, other disciplines, and ancillary services. Incorporate best practices to improve quality of care and clinical judgment.
  • Maintain current expertise in Midwifery Practice and Advanced Practice Nursing.
  • Serve as a clinical expert and resource for education of peers and other health professionals, including residents, especially regarding low‑risk pregnancy management.
  • Follow and perform all related unit‑specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit competency check‑list.
  • Utilize job and unit‑specific equipment as required.
  • Demonstrate behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Expertise).
  • Perform all other related job duties as assigned.
Experience

Generally requires 5 to 7 years of related experience.

Education

Master’s degree in Nursing is required.

Credentials
  • Valid Florida licensed RN/ARNP or eligibility for licensure as Nurse Midwife/Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.
  • National Board Certification in the related field (National Board Certification Nurse Midwife or Nurse Practitioner).
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life‑support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at the institution for the duration of employment.
  • Must maintain valid and current all unit‑specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licenses as required by regulatory and/or nursing standard of practice for the specialty.
