Miami-Dade Corrections Health Services (CHS) operates under Jackson Health System (JHS) and serves approximately 5,000 patients daily. Patient care is delivered by nearly 400 healthcare employees representing a diverse multidisciplinary team of nurses & nurse support staff, physicians, psychiatrists, social workers and other professionals. CHS supports Miami Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation at 3 facilities in Miami-Dade County and leverages the resources of a large public safety net health system in the areas of education, quality, risk management & compliance.
SummaryLicensed Practical Nurse performs advanced practical nursing work in the care and treatment of physically or mentally ill patients. Employees in this classification perform a variety of nursing care assignments in one or more inpatient or outpatient areas, requiring more advanced knowledge and skills of practical nursing. Emphasis of the work is on performance of specialized as well as more difficult and responsible duties in patient care, giving assistance to physicians and nurses, and performing instructional tasks.
Responsibilities- Interviews patient about current problems, medications, and allergies and reviews medical record for pertinent previous and current information.
- Keeps patients informed of their medical condition and the course of treatment being prescribed by an MD.
- Participates in patient treatment regimen, including administering medications (under the supervision of a physician and registered nurse).
- Establishes and documents patient treatment regimen under supervision of RN or MD and implements treatment as directed.
- Performs routine immunizations, nebulizer treatments, and visual acuity testing, and administers and reads TB tests.
- Assists in phlebotomy identifies patient, checks requisition form for requested tests, and prepares equipment, patient and puncture site.
- Assists in IV set-up: verifying solution to be administered, evaluating infusion site, checking IV function and patient comfort, and discontinuing IV at appropriate time, as ordered by MD and under supervision of an RN.
- Maintains adequate inventory of narcotics after each tour of duty, examination room supplies and prepares exam rooms at the beginning and end of day and between each patient contact.
- Performs variety of office responsibilities: answers phones and takes messages and performs triage within scope of licensed practical nursing practice in an accurate and timely manner.
- Facilitates and assists in the coordination of patient referrals. Participates in the orientation and training of new personnel.
- Demonstrates commitment to service excellence by consistently adjusting work pace when needed in order to maintain or improve patient care outcomes.
- Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency checklist.
- Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.
- Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
Generally, requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.
EducationGraduation from an accredited LPN program is required.
SkillAbility to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.
CredentialsValid Florida LPN license is required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment. 30 hour IV training must be from a Florida Board of Nursing approved program or be a Compact Nursing State (States participating in the multi-state compacts licensing).
