The primary purpose of the Radiation Oncology Registered Nurse is to provide appropriate clinical care, education, and support the delivery of exceptional patient experience by responding to patient needs as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality care. The Registered Nurse demonstrates competence in providing nursing care to the radiation oncology patient as specified by the Nurse Practice Act and the Board of Nursing.
The registered nurse is expected to observe, conceptualize, and analyze clinical or nonclinical problems related to health; and to utilize critical thinking and evidence-based practice to collaborate with the health care team. Responsibilities include clinical practice, education, research, and consultation, as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with oncologists and the multidisciplinary team on patient care
- Facilitate data collection and assessment during patient examinations and treatment
- Administer medications as per policy and procedure
- Perform nursing observations as per policy and procedure during procedures, including treatments that require sedation
- Attend to procedures and exams with the Physician or APP
- Perform venipuncture and IV fluid/medication administration as directed by physician or APP
- Complete contemporaneous documentation as per policy and procedure
- Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological and spiritual support to patients, family and friends
- Provide comprehensive patient education as per policy and procedure
- Provide mentoring to junior staff and/or students
- Attend annual OSHA/Biomedical update meetings and application in the clinical setting
- Maintain professional development and set goals to address gaps or desired growth
- Protect patients and their families by adhering to HIPAA and infection control policy and procedure
- Contribute to the team effort by assisting with team goals
- Bring a positive, enthusiastic and ‘can-do’ attitude to work
- Develop and maintain professional working relationships
- Resonate with the high-performance culture
- Other duties as assigned
- Hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted State License – RN
- Current ONC certification or able to obtain ONC certification within 24 months of hire
- Sound clinical experience and competence as a Registered Nurse
- Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to demonstrate empathy for patients and their care
- Demonstrated clinical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to plan and coordinate the clinical management of care
- Commitment to and involvement in the application of quality improvement and evidence-based practice principles
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a team member
- Current BLS certification
- ACLS required for offices performing procedures
- Experience in the field of oncology, working with a variety of patients
- Minimum of 1 year as a Registered Nurse
