University of Miami / UHealth Department of SCCC – South Florida’s only NCI‑Designated Cancer Center – is seeking a Full‑Time Core Facility Research Specialist 2 to work at the UHealth medical campus in Miami, FL.
Department SpecificsSouth Florida’s only NCI‑Designated Cancer Center, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, is a pioneer in groundbreaking cancer research and care. The center has more than 3,160 physicians, researchers and staff and supports seven highly specialized Shared Resources. The Onco‑Genomics Shared Resource (OGSR) provides access to cutting‑edge technologies for studying genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, and metagenomics of cancer.
Position SummaryWe are seeking an individual with laboratory experience in molecular biology to join our busy OGSR team. Responsibilities include running NGS library prep and sequencing, single‑cell sample QC, capture and stabilization, loading and monitoring spatial biology platforms, or nucleic acid extraction and quality assessment. Essential administrative tasks encompass tracking and processing project requests, interpreting and reporting assay performance and data handover.
This position interacts with Cancer Center investigators and staff of other Shared Resources. The OGSR is well resourced and offers excellent opportunities for early‑career training in genomics technologies. Key instrumentation includes an Illumina Nova Seq X Plus, Bruker Spatial Biology Geo Mx and Cos Mx systems, 10x Genomics Chromium X and Visium Cyt Assist platforms, Mission Bio Tapestri, Revvity Zephyr, Hamilton Vantage liquid handlers, a Thermo Fisher Apex and Qiagen digital PCR.
Hands‑on experience with any of these instruments or with specific NGS modalities is an advantage.
- Assists in the operation of sophisticated scientific equipment.
- Assists in developing new core procedures and applications.
- Ensures the lab adheres to regulatory policies and follows SOPs.
- Reviews laboratory results and maintains records in an appropriate lab notebook or database.
- Trains other SR staff and users on procedures or applications.
- Evaluates inventory of supplies and reagents, communicates order needs, places orders and verifies receipts, and manages stock.
- Assists in performing QA/QC and maintenance of laboratory equipment, including making minor repairs or coordinating with service engineers.
- Acquires new software, cloud‑based tools, online webforms and databases, developing computational proficiency as needed.
- Maintains excellent record‑keeping for all laboratory work and client interactions.
- Keeps up with current publications related to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
- Detailed, accurate completion of assignments.
- Discretion in handling confidential information.
- Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Effective interpersonal relationship building.
- Skill in collecting, organizing and analyzing data.
