Position: Scientist - Full Time, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute

Scientist - Full Time, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute

University of Miami – Base on the University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida – full‑time scientist position in the Department of Research.

Core Job Functions
  • Oversee research employees, students, and other relevant staff
  • Authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent applications
  • Assist in the development of training materials for research staff
  • Plan experiments and record and analyze findings
  • Prepare research proposals and funding applications
  • Ensure that all activities comply with applicable quality and regulatory standards
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant scientific and technical developments
  • Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences
  • Adhere to university and unit‑level policies and procedures and safeguard university assets
Qualifications

Education: Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral‑level degree in a relevant field.

Experience: Minimum 10 years of relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions

Department Specifics:

  • Develop machine learning and data‑mining models, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), Transformers, large language models (LLMs), and vision‑language models (VLMs)
  • Develop Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) models
  • Develop manifold‑learning techniques such as tSNE and UMAP, and unsupervised clustering
  • Analyze electronic health record (EHR) data and retinal imaging (fundus photographs, OCT images, genetic data) for automated screening, diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and uveitis
  • Program in Python and R with knowledge of Tensor Flow, PyTorch, scikit‑learn, Keras, or other deep‑learning libraries
  • Perform genetic data analysis
