Assistant Scientist – University of Miami UHealth Neurology Department. Full‑time position located at the UHealth Medical Campus. The Assistant Scientist carries out a research agenda aligned with the university’s goals, publishes findings, and supports the department’s reputation as a leader in the field.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to basic and applied research activities, author scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and prepare patents.
  • Collaborate with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.
  • Design, conduct experiments, and analyze data.
  • Work with other researchers to develop and use end products.
  • Write extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
  • Provide ready access to all experimental data for management and staff.
  • Request or acquire equipment and supplies for assigned projects.
  • Utilize the internet, surveys, legal documents, and other sources to collect information.
  • Apply for grants to continue research and prepare materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.
  • Adhere to university and unit‑level policies, procedures, and safeguard university assets.
Department Specific Functions
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research aligned with departmental and School of Medicine priorities.
  • Develop and execute funded research projects; contribute to grant submissions as Co‑I.
  • Apply for self‑led federal or private funding opportunities as per eligibility.
  • Supervise and mentor postdocs, graduate students, technicians, and trainees.
  • Lead or support core research activities, shared resources, and specialized instrumentation.
  • Publish peer‑reviewed manuscripts and present findings at scientific meetings.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance (IACUC, biosafety) and maintain research documentation.
  • Participate in departmental seminars, journal clubs, and research retreats.
  • Present research at local and international conferences.
  • Lead and contribute interdisciplinary collaborations across the School of Medicine and affiliated institutes.
  • Support training initiatives, workshops, and trainee skill development.
  • Provide service on departmental or School of Medicine committees as assigned.
Core Qualifications
  • Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral‑level degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
