Position: Facilities Mechanic I (Full Time)

Overview

Under general supervision, the Facilities Mechanic 1 performs general maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings requiring practical skill and knowledge in such trades as painting, carpentry, plumbing, door hardware, HVAC, and electrical work. Work involves a variety of duties beyond those of skilled craft workers, emphasizing safe work practices. The position supports after‑hours and weekend events by assisting with operation of building lighting, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of maintenance functions in and around the facility, including routine, emergency, and scheduled maintenance to the building and associated equipment.
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures of the museum.
  • Perform building, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, door, drywall, ceiling tiles, painting, and repairs as necessary.
  • Implement preventative maintenance measures on tools and equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and tools.
  • Respond quickly to emergencies (fire alarm, power outages, floods, elevator entrapments) and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, hazard‑free work environment within area of responsibility.
  • Maintain positive work relationships and exhibit teamwork and collaboration with all levels of museum staff.
  • Maintain rooms and all mechanical areas clean and well organized.
  • Use equipment, tools, and vehicles safely and carefully.
  • Communicate via radio system professionally and effectively.
  • Provide coverage for hurricanes and other emergencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or technical certificate required and a minimum of one (1) year’s experience performing general maintenance duties (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other facility repairs) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to use hand and power tools and specialized equipment in electrical, plumbing, or carpentry trades.
  • Excellent hand/eye coordination and close vision.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret plans, diagrams, and drawings.
  • Ability to work self‑sufficiently with minimal supervision in support of after‑hours and weekend events.
  • Flexible schedule availability, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Experience with door hardware repairs and maintenance is a plus.
  • Ability to manage material resources and time; work safely; follow directions, instructions, and structured processes.
  • Customer service skills to respond to inquiries and requests and to elevate more difficult matters appropriately.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities and build effective relationships with staff and customers.
  • Organizational, problem‑solving, and common‑sense skills.
  • Ability to travel to various facilities and work independently and as a team.
  • Ability to work well in a customer environment.
Physical Demands

Must regularly sit; use hands to handle or feel; talk and hear; stand and walk for prolonged periods. May climb and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally lift or move objects weighing 50‑70 pounds. Requires vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Must work in high and low places, near fiberglass insulation, and under sinks and cabinets.

Work

Environment

Work is performed indoors and outdoors in a public attraction facility. May require driving to worksite locations. Equipment may be located in mechanical rooms, rooftops, and outside the facility. Employees may be exposed to hazardous or toxic substances, electrical shock, equipment noise, and weather conditions (wind, rain, cold, heat).

  • Background clearance.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
