Shop Diesel Mechanic II – Cox Automotive Inc.

Job Summary

We are hiring a Shop Diesel Technician II to support future growth. The role involves licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and follow‑up repairs, diagnostic work, and other duties as assigned. The technician will work under the supervision of a Sr. Shop Diesel Technician or higher for more advanced tasks.

Duties
  • Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Determine parts required for each job and coordinate with the Shop Parts Department.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in cleanup at the end of each day.
  • Apply knowledge gained through training or on‑the‑job experience to perform the job.
  • Work with Service Writers to assess customer needs and resolve issues.
  • Manage concurrent tasks and prioritize work effectively.
  • Act with integrity, honesty, and confidentiality.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
  • Occasionally travel to customer locations.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and equipment lubrication.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Document work and upload pictures of parts used and findings on Repair Orders using company devices or the Karmak application.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and other required documentation promptly.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity within or close to standard repair times.
  • Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals and discuss repair estimates.
  • Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
  • Participate in all company‑required safety training.
  • Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks and conduct safety checks and pre/post trip inspections.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on truck equipment such as electrical, brake, cooling, starters, alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering, engines, transmissions, clutches, & differential systems.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair various truck equipment including electrical, brake, cooling, air conditioning, and more.
  • Use test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges to inspect, test, and diagnose defective equipment.
  • Assist Shop Diesel Technician I with diagnostics.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma / GED with 3 years of related experience (alternative combinations such as a degree or 5 years of experience are acceptable).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a Driver Qualification File.
  • Valid DOT Medical Card or ability to obtain one before hire or within 72 hours.
  • Possess a set of hand tools necessary for the job.
  • Participate in and complete all company‑required training.
Skills & Abilities
  • Understand implications of new information for problem‑solving and decision‑making.
  • Lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
  • Communicate information succinctly and effectively in two‑way interactions.
  • Determine the type of tools and equipment needed for tasks.
  • Accurately judge distances and use logic to evaluate alternative solutions.
Required Certifications
  • ASE T8 (PMI) certification (or to be obtained within 18 months).
Preferred Certifications
  • ASE T3 (Drivetrain)
  • ASE T4 (Brakes)
  • ASE T5 (Suspension)
  • ASE T6 (Electrical & Electronic Systems)
  • ASE T7 (HVAC)
  • ASE 608/609 (Petrol/Diesel)
