The Michiana Humane Society seeks a talented, experienced, creative veterinarian, licensed (or able to be) in Indiana, to oversee the general healthcare of 900-1000 shelter animals each year, including wellness care, treatment of illnesses, wound care and neglect. Spay/neuter surgeries including dogs and cats as young as 2-3 months, per Indiana State law. Bring your experience in private practice and help guide our organization in expanding services to the community, too!

You’ll work with a fabulous, colorful RVT who has years of experience, and a team of incredible kennel technicians who care deeply about the animals and love to learn what we can do to make their time at the shelter better. We even have a behavior professional to partner with you! Our cadre of over 100 generous volunteers can also lend a hand.

And all of these people might teach you a thing or two, too.

This position is ideal for the veterinarian on the cusp of retirement, who wants to stay in the game while improving the work-life balance. Or a parent who values available hours for after-school activities but needs to keep the DVM license current. Or the candidate who is curious about the burgeoning new field of shelter medicine – work part time with us, and join one of the many local private practices or 24/7 emergency clinic for a shift or two.

At MHS you will enjoy a flexible schedule of approximately 16-24 hours/week. When you’re not working, we are ten minutes from amazing Lake Michigan beaches, twenty from Harbor Country’s wineries and distilleries, and just 75 minutes from downtown Chicago.

Yes, we are a not-for-profit organization, receiving no tax dollars. This endowed position offers wages of $55/hour.

The Michiana Humane Society, Inc. is a private, open admission animal shelter in Michigan City, Indiana since 1920. We accept dogs, cats and small mammals, placing over 98% once they are healthy. Our animals are either strays or owner surrenders. We are planning for our next century of second chances, and we look forward to working with you!
