Position: Lineman / Signalman Apprentice

Position Summary

Lineman/Signalman Apprentice - Works to install, maintain, and repair electrical transmission systems, signals, and other assets of the Line and Signal Department. Uses hand tools and machines to accomplish assigned tasks. Lifts and carries materials. Climbs poles as necessary. Cleans and clears District property of snow and ice if requested or in conjunction with other duties. Operates District vehicles that include, but are not limited to, vehicles that require a Commercial Driver’s License.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements
  • High school or GED equivalent. Associate’s degree in electrical field or apprenticeship credits are preferred but not required.
  • Eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Valid Driver’s License with satisfactory driving history. People who do not have a Class A Commercial Driver’s License are required to obtain the same during their probationary period.
  • The work is physically demanding. Linemen/signalmen must be able to work outdoors in all weather situations, on uneven surfaces, lift up to seventy-five (75) pounds, and work on feet for up to ten (10) hours per day. Mechanical aptitude, good physical strength and endurance, good interpersonal skills when interacting with supervisors, fellow employees, and passengers.
  • Linemen/signalmen must be available for unplanned overtime and emergency call outs during off-duty hours.
  • Pass a post-offer physical examination, including drug and alcohol tests. You must be in good physical health to fulfill the essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Flexible about unexpected changes in work assignments or priorities. Most of the work assignments will report to headquarters in Michigan City. However, applicants must have the flexibility to report for work at any location between South Bend, and Hegewisch, Illinois. Reliable transportation to and from work is essential.
  • Experience in the electrical craft, including the use of tools associated with this work, is preferred but not required. Coursework equivalent acceptable.
  • Evidence of a work history showing ability to multi-task, balance priorities, initiative, and independent work is preferred but not required.
Schedule

The normal scheduled work hours are 0700 to 1530, Monday through Friday. It is expected that the position will be headquartered in Michigan City – though there is the possibility that the position may be headquartered at other locations based on the needs of the service. The District may furlough this position at any time based on the needs of the service.

Mandatory overtime, weekend work, or a 4-10 work schedule may occur.

Salary and Benefits

The starting hourly rate for the position is $31.59. Benefits include a Railroad Retirement Board pension, vacation, personal days, and full medical benefit package. Details pursuant to federal law and the union contract. Employees must travel at their own expense between their home and their headquarters (Michigan City or as otherwise designated).

Work Environment

Work is indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Most work is during daylight hours but may be required at other times to address the needs of the service. Work is on significantly uneven surfaces and may require work on wet or slippery surfaces. Levels of activity vary from moderate to intense. Stressful situations may occur. Exposure to heat, humidity, cold, rain, and snow is common.
