Position Summary/Objective

To further the mission of Girl Scout camp by serving as the primary team member responsible for managing the mental and emotional health needs of campers and occasionally staff as they arise. This includes assisting campers in moments of crisis; reasoning with campers who may need extra support; monitoring and assessing camper behaviors; and advising the Director team on appropriate actions to take.

Essential

Functions

Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Be on-call for camper mental health needs. Staff may call upon the wellness coordinator to meet with a camper who is struggling and needs extra support.
  • Help calm and regulate campers or staff who might be in crisis.
  • Work closely and coordinate with the Health Director, Camp Director, and Assistant Director.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude, behavior, and following camp procedures.
  • Adhere to and ensure enforcement of camp rules and communicate them positively and effectively to participants.
  • Self-regulate and adjust personal behavior in a fast-paced community environment.
  • Apply youth development principles to empower campers, embrace diversity, aid in competency development, and build connections.
  • Maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries with campers and staff while building authentic relationships with campers and staff of all ages, and from diverse backgrounds including, but not limited to different races, ethnicities, abilities, socioeconomic statuses, sexual orientations, and gender identities and expressions.
  • Advise camp staff in taking action when a camper or another staff member might need services beyond what Camp Linden can provide. Thoughts or actions of intense self-harm or harm to others are grounds for dismissal directly into parental care or emergency care. Camp Linden, including the Wellness Director, should not assess whether a camper or staff member is a true threat to oneself or others.

If the threat/action has been made, the Wellness Director will consult with the Camp Director and Assistant Director, and that camper or staff members will be asked to leave property. Wellness Director will provide information about additional resources as needed.
  • Create "agreements" for campers during the session if warranted. Come up with a plan about how to help campers who are struggling so that they can be successful at camp and/or discuss what further intervention might be needed if the wellness coordinator and director decide that the child should not remain at camp.
  • Perform additional functions or assume additional responsibilities throughout the facility as needed or as requested by the camp leadership.
  • Ensure staff and camper health paperwork is current and on file.
  • Participate enthusiastically in scheduled camp activities and assist with activities that another staff member is facilitating.
  • Participate as a member of the camp leadership team to plan and supervise camp activities and the implementation of staff training.
  • Support counseling staff with daily care and supervision of campers.
  • Take the initiative to ensure that everyone has a great summer at camp.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Camp Director will discuss this in further detail with interested candidates.

  • Possess valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to drive to off-camp health provider, physician, or emergency treatment locations. Will not transport campers.
