The Full-Time Theater Technician/Technical Support is responsible for the technical equipment operations, set up, and general support for events at the Theater in the Dale

A. Lyons Building on the Dowagiac Campus (subsequently referred to as the Theater). The Technician will be responsible for providing support for all events, performances and technical assets associated with VAPA . During intersessions and academic breaks, this position will support the IT department with some technical support coverage including special events, computer set ups, and software installations. This position will work varying hours and shifts to accommodate event and director needs, typically 40 hours per week throughout the year.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in music, performance, theatre, education, or related field; OR 2 years of experience in theatre, music, performance, or related musical experience in an educational setting.
  • Experience working with installing software and Windows OS 7 or newer.
  • Experience operating AV equipment including projectors and TVs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field of study.
  • IT related certifications or experience
  • Experience as a Theater Technician
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain and organize all Theater‑related technical assets, including audio and video equipment, lighting equipment, and all related tools. Assess and recommend replacement or improvements to Theater related assets.
  • Provide technical equipment support for Performing Arts events in the Theater, including sound and light design for performances in collaboration with the band, choir, and theater directors.
  • Coordinate audio/video, lighting, and technical needs for non‑Performing Arts campus events held in the Theater. Working closely with maintenance staff, ensure proper set‑up and tear down.
  • Supervise and train student worker(s) to ensure proper staffing and technical assistance is provided for Theater events.
  • Provide technical and logistical support for Performing Arts recruiting events such as Spring Tour and other special events on and off campus.
  • Provide IT technical support, when available, assisting with special events and meetings on campus, PC/laptop replacement, verifying IT equipment in classrooms are functioning properly, installing software updates to equipment in SMC computer labs, verifying campus phone hardware to maintain E911 compliance.
  • Work with the Director of Bands to coordinate a regular piano tuning and maintenance schedule for pianos housed in the Lyons Building.
  • Provide technical support for Summer Camps associated with the Theater or VAPA .
  • Assist with marketing, social media, and publicity efforts for Performing Arts Events to ensure a timely and representative presence.
