Interlochen Arts Academy seeks a Filmmaker in Residence to join the faculty for the spring semester. This full-time, temporary appointment will provide instructional coverage during a faculty sabbatical and will teach three courses in cinematic arts, along with an advisory class for Film & New Media students. The ideal candidate brings professional experience in filmmaking, screenwriting, directing, and visual storytelling, along with the ability to mentor young artists as they develop their creative voices and technical skills.

Interlochen Arts Academy students pursue intensive study in one of seven arts disciplines while completing a college-preparatory academic curriculum. This semester-long residency includes a $16,000 stipend, provided housing, and meals while school is in session. The Filmmaker-in-Residence will also be provided with appropriate workspace and access to the technology and resources needed to support their teaching and creative work.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach three courses in cinematic arts, including two dramatic writing courses developed in collaboration with the Director of Film & New Media and participation in the team-taught Production Workshop course.
  • Teach an advisory class and provide guidance to Film & New Media students in areas including storytelling, skill development, cinema, screenwriting, and portfolio development.
  • Provide thoughtful, constructive feedback on student writing, creative work, and film projects.
  • Advise students as they develop short screenplays into storyboards, shot lists, and other pre-production materials for thesis and other film projects.
  • Hold scheduled tutorials and provide individualized support to students.
  • Participate in Film & New Media department activities and regular faculty meetings.
  • Support daytime and evening rehearsals, casting sessions, and on-location productions as required.
  • Collaborate with Film & New Media faculty to support a cohesive and engaging educational experience for students.
  • Model professional practices and ensure the appropriate use of production facilities and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience and Skills
  • Professional experience in filmmaking, screenwriting, directing, or a closely related area.
  • In-depth understanding of story development and visual storytelling from both a screenwriting and directing perspective.
  • Experience creating visual stories across a variety of media.
  • Experience with multiple genres of dramatic writing and film production.
  • Strong understanding of the filmmaking process, including pre-production, storyboarding, shot-list development, production, and related workflows.
  • Ability to teach and mentor secondary-level students with varying levels of experience.
  • Ability to provide constructive, tactful feedback in both classroom and production settings.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty in a team-teaching environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in classroom, studio, and on-location production environments.
  • Commitment to maintaining professional standards in the use of facilities and production equipment.
