Journeyman Electrician – Grayling Generating Station
Location: Grayling, MI (Hybrid)
Employment Type: Contract through June 1, 2026 (High potential for extension)
Position OverviewThe Grayling Generating Station is a 38 MW biomass‑fueled renewable energy power plant that produces electricity primarily from bark, sawdust, and non‑marketable biomass from local lumber operations. The plant supports sustainable forestry, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, conserves landfill space, and strengthens the electric grid in northern Michigan. Electricity generated is sold under a long‑term power purchase agreement with the client. The facility produces enough electricity to power approximately 38,000 homes.
Commercial operations began in 1992.
The Journeyman Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems, instrumentation, and process control equipment throughout the plant. This role ensures safe and reliable operation of all electrical and control systems, including high‑voltage equipment, motors, PLCs, and instrumentation, while supporting plant operations during normal and upset conditions.
KeyDuties & Responsibilities
- Install, operate, maintain, and repair electrical systems, including motors, switch gear, wiring, cables, and lighting fixtures.
- Install, maintain, and calibrate plant instrumentation and process control equipment, including PLCs, controllers, actuators, and emission monitoring systems.
- Perform preventive and routine maintenance on electrical motors, switch gear, and other rotating equipment, including live high‑voltage work and vibration monitoring.
- Assist operations during plant upsets, trips, or emergencies to restore normal function.
- Read, interpret, and apply electrical, electronic, and logic diagrams, technical manuals, and engineering specifications.
- Maintain accurate records of control and electrical system modifications, including temporary jumpers.
- Ensure a safe work environment by following plant safety rules, identifying hazards, performing housekeeping, and adhering to standard procedures.
- Participate in non‑essential duties as assigned.
- Proficient in reading and understanding complex electrical, electronic, and logic diagrams.
- Experienced in running conduit, wiring breakers, and working with 277 V, 480 V, and 4160 V equipment.
- Skilled in using Megger and wire motors for testing and troubleshooting.
- Strong instrumentation and electrical maintenance skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to apply analytical judgment and past experience to plan and perform diversified work.
- Excellent communication skills to provide clear instructions and feedback to team members.
- Agility to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, and overtime as needed.
- Journeyman Electrician license or equivalent experience.
- Prior experience in power generation or industrial electrical maintenance preferred.
- Strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
