Project Engineer - Structural / Bridge
Spicer Group is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our Structural Services Group as a Project Engineer in one of our offices in Saginaw, St. Johns, or Bingham Farms.
Our rapidly growing Structural Service Group consists of highly educated engineers and designers who work for a variety of clients in the transportation, industrial, commercial, and municipal industries. Typical projects include providing structural design solutions for bridge rehabilitations & replacements, foundation and structural support for industrial and manufacturing processes. Structural design will be completed using standard analytical methods, including finite element analysis and Open Bridge Designer.
This position will assist with the preparation of designs, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, and more on projects across the region and country. It is an opportunity to work at one of Michigan’s top engineering and surveying firms.
Key Responsibilities- Complete lead activities for the preparation of proposals and assist project managers with budgeting, scheduling, directing subordinates, prioritizing multiple projects and deadlines, and communicating with superiors and clients on small to medium sized projects.
- Lead a team of design engineers and coordinate project tasks for timely deliverables.
- Develop design of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for structural and/or bridge projects.
- Complete bridge field condition assessments on local and statewide bridge projects, develop repair recommendations, scoping reports, life‑cycle analyses, and create cost estimates for repairs.
- Perform quality control of all work products prepared under your direction.
- Coordinate and communicate with team members, clients, contractors, and outside consultants.
- Make recommendations for additions, deletions, or substitutions when modifications are necessary.
- Make periodic visits to construction sites as appropriate to review conditions.
- Attend project meetings, public hearings, and make presentations at interviews for new projects.
- Maintain a current knowledge base for the work being performed, including reading professional publications and attending professional meetings and seminars.
- Exercise judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
- Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate engineering work involving conventional practices and may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements.
- Supervise less experienced engineers, technical, or administrative support personnel.
- Be technically involved in the resolution of design problems that may include performing field investigations or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations performed by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project.
- Assist with business development and marketing responsibilities such as proposal preparation, client contact and development, presentations, and attend client‑related functions.
- Prepare structural reports.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a structural focus.
- Professional Engineer licensed in Michigan, or ability to obtain within one year.
- Minimum of five (5) years of related experience with bridge engineering and/or general structural engineering with increasing responsibility.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients.
- Work experience with AutoCAD and/or Micro Station.
- Familiarity with MDOT Bridge Design procedures is a plus.
- Experience with structural engineering analysis software such as RISA‑3D, STAAD Pro, or MathCAD.
