Field Utility Specialist-Grand Rapids

Job Summary

MES is looking for a Field Utility Specialist to join our team! MES is a multifaceted utility and telecommunications engineering firm serving clients throughout the Midwest. The Field Utility Specialist is responsible for conferring with office staff (utility planners, consultants and/or engineers) to understand the scope and requirements for a project while physically inspecting gas, electric, and other data utility systems and associated materials and components.

• Physical inspection of existing poles, lines, and right of ways to assess readiness for new attachments.
• Prepare sketches, locate and document required information electronically.
• Application and analysis of standards and authorities, plans and specifications provided by designers and engineers; responsible for knowing and complying with owner, MES, and MIOSHA site safety rules and regulations at all times.
• Conferring with utility planners, consultants and/or engineers to gain an understanding of the scope and requirements of a project.
• Accurately measuring, documenting, recording, evaluating, and assessing existing utility structures.
• Other duties as assigned by Project Manager.

• Primarily work outdoors, must be able to work in extreme heat and cold.
• Regularly required to walk for long distances.
• Frequently lifts or move objects up to 50 pounds.
• Climb ladders, access and inspect utility infrastructure and cables by climbing down through manhole covered areas.
• Travel within the Midwest States (Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin).

• High School diploma and/or equivalent combination of education & experience.
• Minimum two (2) years applicable experience working with construction, engineering, or facilities maintenance.
• Required to have satisfactory results on a Motor Vehicle Record check and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• OSHA confined space training certification preferred.
• Ability to understand basic principles of public and private utilities.
• Ability to learn and understand civil, structural, electrical, and communication systems and structures.
• Compliance and knowledge of OSHA and site safety rules.
