Job Overview
This position serves as an assistant to Park Recreation Supervisor 12 in a highly complex Park and Recreation unit. The unit includes Indian Lake State Park, Palms Book State Park, Wagner Falls Scenic Site, Laughing Whitefish Falls State Park, Seul Choix Point Lighthouse, rustic state campgrounds, boating access sites, non-motorized pathways, and ORV Trailheads in Schoolcraft & Alger Counties. The supervisor oversees a lead ranger, three ranger E’s, a janitor, an explore guide, and 18 SW 04’s.
The purpose of this position is to provide high‑quality recreational opportunities to the public while preserving and balancing the protection of natural resources. The assistant performs scheduled and unscheduled inspections of the unit, checking quality and quantity of work. Competency in leadership, safety, maintenance, public relations, and financial management is required. The assistant regards safety as a personal responsibility and respects the safety of other employees and the public.
The assistant represents the division with legislative, local governmental units, and business groups in relation to the administration of state lands and facilities under his or her jurisdiction.
The assistant must hold a DNR Law Enforcement Commission.
Attendance at the Parks and Recreation Division Law Enforcement Academy and Ranger Operations Academy is required. These courses total 12 weeks and include overnight stays at a learning facility.
Eligibility Requirements- Pass a pre‑employment physical examination conducted by a healthcare provider designated by the Parks and Recreation Division.
- Successfully pass the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
- Be at least 21 years of age before graduation from the Parks and Recreation Law Academy.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have the ability to obtain a Michigan driver’s license.
- Possess a driving record free of suspension or revocation for two years prior to attendance of the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
- Possess a driving record free of any moving violations for two years prior to attendance of the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
- Possess a clean criminal record absent of any felony convictions or high court misdemeanors.
High school completion is the typical educational level acquired through completion of high school.
ExperienceFour years of park and recreation experience, including one year equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger 9 or two years equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger E8.
AlternateEducation and Experience
Completion of at least 8 semester or 12 term college credit hours in natural resources, park management, outdoor recreation, law enforcement/criminal justice, or environmental studies may be substituted for one year of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger‑E.
Completion of at least 15 semester or 22 term college credit hours in natural resources, park management, outdoor recreation, law enforcement/criminal justice, or environmental studies may be substituted for two years of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger‑E.
Some positions may require certification by the Department of Natural Resources’ Park and Recreation Enforcement Commission. Some positions within this class series are assigned job duties that may require possession of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.
