SUMMARY: Responsible for performance of emergency vehicle and patient care functions in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, statutes and regulations, as well as company policies and local medical protocols. This position participates in basic and advanced life support procedures performed on an emergency medical response and/or transport.

- Participate in the delivery of patient care
- Assure that the medic unit is completely stocked, clean, and in good running order at the beginning and end of each shift
- Examine patients and report medical conditions to emergency department personnel
- Prepare medical reports and invoices of runs made by the crew
- Attend training sessions as required to maintain certification
- Clean vehicles and patient care compartments and maintain stations in a neat, orderly fashion
- Report vehicle and equipment malfunctions to the Control Center and/or appropriate supervisor
- Help perform routine maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment in conjunction with completion of medic unit checklist
- Other roles and responsibilities as assigned
- Exceptional knowledge of emergency care procedures
- Exceptional knowledge of common physical illnesses, obvious symptoms, and appropriate medical terminology
- Exceptional knowledge of city streets and traffic regulations
- Demonstrate the ability to think and act quickly in stressful situations
- Considerable skill in the application of emergency care procedures and equipment
- Responsible for maintaining a good working relationship with fellow crew members, police, fire, and the general public
- Ability to prepare detailed written reports
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license and a good driving record
- Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Must be interviewed by Life EMS designee
- Must pass all Life EMS pre‑employment requirements as outlined on the Conditional Offer of Employment
- Must possess current Paramedic license issued by the state of Michigan
- Must pass local medical control authorization requirements
- Must possess current BLS CPR card
- Must obtain a trauma certification, such as PHTLS
- Must obtain a pediatric certification, such as EPC, PALS, or PEPP
- Must be certified and current ACLS
- Sit and drive using frequent wrist motions and forward reaches
- Walk, climb stairs, carry medical equipment up to 70 lbs
- Push and pull wheelchairs while ascending or descending stairs with a 130‑pound patient
- Lift, push and pull stretcher to load and unload a 150‑pound patient (with assistance of one other Paramedic)
- Lift and transfer loads up to 150 pounds (with assistance of one other Paramedic)
- Climb ladder, crawl
- Lifting one end of a stretcher weighing 105 lbs from chest to overhead (48”–66”)
- Ability to wear particulate respirator; facial hair (except a mustache to the corners of the mouth) is prohibited
- Note:
Life EMS may require shifts outside of requested availability (days, nights, weekends, holidays)
