Overview
The Student Resource Patient Care Technician role is a program for qualified nursing students in an accredited nursing program. The Patient Care Technician is an entry-level position to provide observation for patients who require close continuous observation for protection from harm. Employees report to a unit or department leader, with the director providing high-level oversight.
Responsibilities- As directed by the RN: provide standby assistance during patient ambulation; accompany the patient when transported to other departments; assist with tasks that are not required to be performed by the RN or Care Assistant, such as assisting with meals if directed by the RN.
- Maintain a calm, clean, and safe environment. Follow appropriate safety precautions and PPE utilization while observing the patient. Maintain confidentiality.
- Document observations accurately and timely as directed by the RN.
- Immediately communicate significant information to the RN such as changes in the patient s behavior or condition. Follow emergency procedures in the event of any emergency situation such as an accident, injury, or significant change in the patient’s condition.
- Remain awake, alert, calm, and professional, staying in constant view of the patient at all times and focused on the patient.
- Do NOT take independent action(s) with patients. Tasks must be directed or approved by the RN.
- Other duties as assigned by the RN or management leader.
- BLS - Basic Life Support
- Required Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer.
- PCT - MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification
- Required Equivalent Experience - New hires or transfers must hold an internal My Michigan Health Patient Care Technician certification, OR successful completion of one semester of nursing clinical education by an Accredited Registered Nurse Program. Employees may also hold a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan, completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse Program culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan, Medical Assistant with the following:
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologist (AMT), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), OR equivalent Medical Assistant Credential such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant CCMA, etc
High School Diploma or GED
Experience, Training And Skills- Computer experience required.
- Good organizational skills, a team player and ability to work under high pressure.
- Ability to exercise good judgement.
- Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

- Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
- Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
- Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
- Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
- Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.
- Must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
- Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
- Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently (34-66% of) the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
