The Trinity Health St Joseph Mercy Health System and Chelsea Hospital is seeking a contingent Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist to join its team of six (6) Medical Physicists and six (6) Dosimetrists that provide coverage for five (5) facilities across the greater Ann Arbor area.

We are an integrated system using ARIA and Eclipse 16.1 with the Rad Formation suite of products, Varian accelerators, with active Cyber Knife and HDR programs at our Ann Arbor campus. The successful candidate would assist at facilities with a Varian True Beam linear accelerator, Vision

RT, 6

DOF, and a 4

DCT simulator. We also support the education of radiation therapy students at all our locations.

Position Purpose

Responsible for calibrating radiation therapy treatment machines, quality assurance equipment and maintains these in accordance with state and federal regulations. Calculates prescribed doses of radiation for patients undergoing radiation therapy treatments. Provides support and consultation to radiation oncology physicians in delivery of radiation doses to patients. Functionally supervises staff physicists, dosimetrists, and other treatment planning staff. Develops and maintains quality assurance standards in line with requirements of the regulatory and professional agencies.

Qualifications
  • M.S. or PhD degree in medical physics required.
  • A  certification strongly preferred, A  eligible required.
  • At least five years of work experience in a progressive radiation oncology facility is preferred. One to two years of experience required.
Responsibilities
  • Performs and ensures the proper calibration of radiation producing machines and equipment used for the treatment of radiation oncology patients according to predetermined department standards.
  • Develops and performs routine quality assurance on equipment to ensure that radiation producing machines and associated equipment are maintained properly in order to ensure the constancy of radiation doses delivered to patient per department standards.
  • Develops and recommends specific treatment plans based on a thorough review and analysis of radiation beam data and patient data.
  • Initiates the development of departmental procedures, policies, treatment techniques and apparatus for planning and treatment delivery.
  • Works with the radiation oncologist in the development of new treatment protocols.
  • Develops and performs quality control on dosimetry equipment including treatment planning computers, calibration equipment, beam monitoring equipment, compensator maker, block cutter and simulators. Routinely test equipment for proper function.
  • Performs patient related dosimetry measurements using ionization chambers, film, thermal-lucent dosimeters (TLD) and the like.
  • Calibrates and maintain records of radionuclides used for brachytherapy patient treatment. Assembles and prepares radionuclides for internal and interstitial application to patients.
  • Loads applicators, threads radioactive sources, as needed. Maintains use log. Returns sources to storage area.
  • Monitors or supervises the monitoring of patients undergoing brachytherapy treatment. Measures radioactive levels in the hospital room. Ensures proper shielding is in place. Instructs nursing and other hospital personnel in proper care of patient.
  • Verifies accuracy of calculations done for patients under treatment. Reviews and audits patients’ treatment records (written and electronic) in order to ensure that the prescribed dose of radiation is being delivered.
  • Functionally supervises and assists dosimetrists in the calculation of patient treatment plans. Functionally supervises Physics Assistant.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
