Overview

Education Law Attorney-Special Education (IDEA/504), Title IX & K-12, Under grade and Graduate, and Disabilities

Advocate | Strategist | Client-Centered Counselor

Join a motivated team of zealous advocates representing students, parents, and families throughout Michigan in high-stakes education matters involving special education rights, disability accommodations, Title IX investigations, and school discipline. Build an extraordinary career and life with a client-centered firm that prioritizes your professional growth, financial success, and work-life balance—without workplace drama.

We are seeking more than a legal technician. We want an attorney who is passionate about protecting educational access, civil rights, and due process; someone who sees opportunity where others see bureaucracy; and someone who can guide families through confusing, emotionally charged systems with clarity, confidence, and empathy.

This position is ideal for an attorney who thrives in advocacy-heavy work, strategic problem-solving, and direct client engagement.

You May Be a Good Fit If You
  • Can put yourself in a family’s shoes during an unexpected, high-stress educational crisis
  • Are compassionate, empathetic, and composed under pressure
  • Communicate clearly with parents, students, and administrators
  • Take pride in high-quality, detail-oriented advocacy
  • Want to practice law with a supportive, collaborative team
  • Are confident, independent, decisive, and accountable
This Position Is Not for You If
  • You are uncomfortable advocating forcefully with school districts, administrators, or institutions
  • You avoid emotionally charged client situations involving children, disabilities, or discipline
  • You prefer passive legal work over strategic advocacy
  • You are unwilling to challenge institutional decision-making when necessary

Clients often face unexpected crises involving suspensions, expulsions, special education disputes, Title IX allegations, or threats to their child’s academic future. Strong written and verbal advocacy is required.

Responsibilities

Represent clients in education law matters, including:

  • Section 504 accommodation and discrimination claims
  • Title IX investigations and hearings
  • K–12, under grade and graduate students with discipline matters, including suspensions, expulsions, and due process hearings
  • Conduct client consultations and ongoing strategy sessions by phone, Zoom, and in person
  • Advocate for clients in IEP meetings, manifestation determination reviews, resolution sessions, disciplinary hearings, and negotiations with school districts
  • Draft complaints, responses, motions, memoranda, correspondence, and settlement agreements
  • Prepare clients for hearings, meetings, and investigations
  • Manage cases from intake through resolution, ensuring deadlines and compliance
  • Collaborate closely with attorneys, paralegals, experts, and consultants
  • Lead and delegate to your support team to deliver high-quality, client-centered representation
  • Conduct legal research and writing using Westlaw
  • Address collateral consequences impacting academic placement, graduation, and future opportunities
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the State Bar of Michigan (required)
  • Experience or strong interest in:
Special education law (IDEA, IEPs, due process hearings)
  • Section 504 and disability accommodations
  • Title IX investigations and proceedings
  • K–12 under grade and graduate student discipline
  • Hearing, administrative, or advocacy experience preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional client service skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Positive, professional attitude
  • Ability to analyze, collaborate, and implement effective legal strategies
  • Ability to travel throughout Michigan for client matters
Compensation

$87,500 - $108,000 yearly
