Job Summary: The Environmental Health and Safety Manager position is responsible for both the strategic direction and day-to-day execution of the company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs. This position ensures compliance with all applicable local, state (MIOSHA, EGLE), and federal regulations while actively coordinating, implementing, and sustaining safety initiatives on the production floor. The Safety Director partners closely with operations, maintenance, quality, and leadership teams to drive a practical, accountable, and continuous improvement–focused safety culture.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve company-wide Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs and procedures.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and subject matter expert for MIOSHA, EGLE, and applicable federal regulations.
  • Lead, participate in, and facilitate Safety Committee meetings, ensuring effective follow-up and closure of action items.
  • Conduct and oversee safety, environmental, and compliance audits and inspections on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis.
  • Actively participate in new hire orientation and deliver safety training across all levels of the organization.
  • Coordinate, perform, and document Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and hazard assessments on the production floor.
  • Lead incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and root cause analyses; develop and track corrective actions to completion.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the Employee Safety Manual, policies, procedures, and training materials.
  • Develop and manage a structured safety calendar covering inspections, training, audits, and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with operations and engineering teams to support safe equipment design, new applications, and process changes.
  • Manage relationships with insurance carriers, regulatory agencies, and external auditors; coordinate inspections and follow-up actions.
  • Support injury trend analysis, and return-to-work initiatives.
  • Track, analyze, and report safety performance metrics (TRIR, DART, near misses, corrective actions) to leadership.
  • Identify and support capital improvement needs related to safety, ergonomics, and environmental risk reduction.
  • Drive employee engagement and accountability through audits, communication, training, and visible presence on the shop floor.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Strong ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on execution.
  • Proven capability to coordinate multiple initiatives and drive tasks to completion.
  • Working knowledge of MIOSHA, EGLE, and federal safety and environmental regulations.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to influence and partner with all levels of the organization.
  • Data-driven problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety tracking/reporting systems.
  • Experience with risk management programs.
  • Knowledge of health and safety, environmental and loss prevention procedures.
  • Will support the Standish and Bay City locations.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or related field, preferred.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in safety or EHS roles within a manufacturing environment, required.
  • MIOSHA 10-hour and/or 30-hour certification required or ability to obtain.
  • Storm Water Pollution Program Certified Operator, preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading safety programs, audits, investigations, and training.
  • Experience working directly with MIOSHA and EGLE regulations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May include oversight of safety-related personnel and strong functional leadership across departments, with authority to coordinate and enforce safety standards.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in both office and manufacturing environments.
  • Regular presence on the production floor is required.
  • Must be able to participate in audits, inspections, training, and incident response activities as needed.
  • Must meet company pre-employment and ongoing safety requirements.
