Summary
Under the general direction of nursing leadership, the Clinical Supervisor RN position is responsible for serving as a clinical resource and unit expert for staff.
The clinical supervisor will use a staffing matrix based on benchmarking data as well as clinical judgment to determine staffing needs and scheduling patterns for appropriate coverage.
Maintains responsibility and accountability for the quality and safety of patient care throughout the hospital. Participates in direct patient care as needed and appropriate.
Plans and implements programs for orientation, staff development and on-going education of employees. Works to assure compliance with Joint Commission and CMS standards and regulations.
The Clinical Supervisor RN uses the Code of Ethics for nurses with interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice.
Responsibilities(25%)* Participates in direct patient care when needed and appropriate. Maintains quality assurance within the area of responsibility and possesses a high degree of clinical expertise in that area. Remains available for staff consultations and recommends changes when appropriate.
(25%)* Directs patient activity within the area of responsibility. Provides on-going evaluation of patient status and suggests changes in treatment program to physicians involved as necessary. Makes changes in staffing assignments as level of activity changes. Interprets physician orders and helps staff work within orders to obtain desired results.
(25%)* Plans, develops, implements and evaluates educational programs for orientation, staff development and continued growth of all employees within the department. Councils staff as needed and appropriately escalate performance concerns.
(25%)* Determines staffing needs and scheduling patterns for coverage of unit and coordinates this with the Manager of Nursing. Approves or denies requests for vacation, personal holidays, or sick days and corrects staffing accordingly. Works within established budget for area.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with hiring, disciplining, counseling and discharging employees within the area according to medical center policy.
Responsible for indirectly evaluating staff within area of responsibility through annual Job Performance Reviews.
Takes an active part in nursing leadership meetings and committees.
Identifies needs, plans, develops and implements programs for orientation, staff development and on-going employee education.
Facilitates education and directs role out of new initiatives to obtain and or maintain quality measures set by The Joint Commission and CMS.
Works with physicians and non-nursing department personnel in planning coordinated patient care.
Follows lines of authority, responsibility and communication within designated area, nursing service and other departments.

Knowledge of nursing practice and procedures as normally acquired through 3 years experience working in a medical center or similar setting.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
