Position Title: Registered Nurse – Allergy & Asthma
Position Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides clinical nursing support within the Allergy and Asthma practice, working collaboratively with physicians, clinical staff, and patients. This position is responsible for allergy serum preparation, allergy immunotherapy, diagnostic testing, patient education, clinical follow-up, and coordination of care for patients with allergic, asthma, and related conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare, mix, dilute, and maintain allergen immunotherapy serums in accordance with provider orders, established protocols, manufacturer recommendations, and applicable safety standards.
- Maintain accurate documentation and labeling of allergy serums, including concentrations, expiration dates, dosing schedules, and patient‑specific treatment information.
- Administer subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy injections according to prescribed treatment schedules and established clinical protocols.
- Assess patients before and following allergy injections and monitor for local or systemic reactions.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to adverse reactions, including anaphylaxis, according to established emergency protocols.
- Perform allergy skin testing, including appropriate patient preparation, testing procedures, monitoring, documentation, and patient education.
- Perform spirometry and other pulmonary function testing as ordered, ensuring accurate test performance and documentation of results.
- Provide direct nursing care and assessment to patients presenting for allergy, asthma, and immunology services.
- Communicate laboratory and diagnostic test results to patients as directed by the provider and provide appropriate follow‑up instructions.
- Provide patient education regarding allergic conditions, asthma management, medications, inhaler use, environmental controls, immunotherapy, and avoidance measures.
- Reinforce individualized asthma and allergy action plans and educate patients regarding symptoms requiring provider evaluation, urgent care, or emergency treatment.
- Respond to patient telephone calls and electronic messages, utilizing nursing judgment and established protocols to appropriately triage clinical concerns.
- Coordinate medication refills, testing, referrals, and follow‑up care as appropriate and within RN scope of practice.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation within the electronic health record.
- Review and maintain emergency medications, clinical supplies, testing materials, and allergy serum supplies, including monitoring expiration dates and inventory.
- Follow infection prevention, medication safety, and quality‑control standards within the clinical environment.
- Assist providers with patient examinations, procedures, treatments, and other clinical needs as necessary.
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, and administrative staff to support efficient patient flow and continuity of care.
