Position: Park & Recreation Ranger 9 (Onaway State Park)
Location: Onaway

This position oversees and participates in the day‑to‑day work activities of the unit with regard to the operations of Parks and Recreation Division‑administered facilities. The employee assists the Unit Supervisor/Manager in various administrative tasks and performs operational and maintenance duties, trains and directs subordinate staff, maintains grounds, infrastructure and equipment, and serves as the worksite safety officer.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee day‑to‑day operations of Parks and Recreation facilities.
  • Assist the Unit Supervisor/Manager in administrative tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Perform operating and maintenance duties consistent with Parks and Recreation Division operations.
  • Train, provide direction to subordinate staff and maintain grounds, infrastructure, and equipment.
  • Serve as the worksite safety officer, ensuring personal and workplace safety.
  • Assist in the operations and training of staff at Aloha State Park as needed.
Required Commission and Training
  • Must hold a DNR Law Enforcement Commission.
  • Attendance at the Parks and Recreation Division Law Enforcement Academy and Ranger Operations Academy (12 weeks total, requiring overnight stays).
Eligibility Requirements
  • Pass a pre‑employment physical examination conducted by a health care provider designated by the Parks and Recreation Division.
  • Successfully pass the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
  • Be at least 21 years of age before graduation from the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have the ability to obtain a Michigan driver’s license.
  • Possess a driving record free of suspension or revocation for two years prior to attendance of the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
  • Possess a driving record free of any moving violations for two years prior to attendance of the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
  • Possess a clean criminal record absent of any felony convictions or high court misdemeanors.
Physical and Health Requirements
  • Pass a pre‑employment physical examination.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of park and recreation experience, including one year equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger E8.
  • At least 8 semester (12‑term) college credits in natural resources, park management, or outdoor recreation may substitute for one year of experience.
  • At least 15 semester (22‑term) college credits in natural resources, park management, or outdoor recreation may substitute for two years of experience.
Additional Licensing
  • Some positions may require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State.
  • Commissioning by the Department of Natural Resources to enforce state park rules and state laws may be required for some positions.
