Overview
Seasonal Maintenance Worker (Trails) – National Park Service. The incumbent works primarily on backcountry and front country trails, assisting journeyman tradesmen in all areas of trails maintenance.
Responsibilities- Assist in the construction and maintenance of graded and paved trails, trail bridges, and guard rails.
- Install, repair, and replace water diversion bars, cribbing, and retainer walls.
- Remove windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings, and debris from trails; build up tread surfaces in eroded areas; install stepping stones at creek crossings where bridges cannot be constructed.
- Use hand and power tools safely and maintain them properly.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Must obtain Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) or equivalent after duty date.
- Valid driver’s license required; submit Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and driving record.
- Must wear uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards; uniform allowance provided.
- Minimum age: 18 years old or 16 years old with high‑school graduation or equivalent, vocational training, or enrollment in secondary school.
- Government housing available.
- Ability to perform common maintenance work in one trade such as masonry, carpentry, painting, and other trades appropriate to trail construction and maintenance.
- Use and maintain common hand tools for simple maintenance tasks.
- Operate motorized utility terrain vehicles (UTV), 4x4, and utility vehicles.
- Carry heavy objects up to 100 pounds and hike mountainous terrain up to 12 miles per day.
- Work under normal supervision of a work leader or journeyman‑level employee.

Physical Demands & Working ConditionsHeavy physical exertion required: bending, lifting, hand and power tools. Frequently lift and carry objects up to 100 pounds, carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons, use hammers, use shovels extensively; frequently walk up to 20 miles daily. Must be able to live and work in isolated backcountry areas, mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet, all extremes of weather.
Trail work is dusty; hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in rock slide areas, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.
