Job Description

Under the leadership and guidance of the Fire Alarm Field Representative, installs, repairs, services, and tests fire alarm systems and related systems in schools, offices, and other facilities. Performs specialized skilled electrical duties pertaining to fire alarm systems. Guides and coordinates work with electricians, contractors, and other stakeholders to support project execution.

Responsibilities
  • Installs, repairs, services, and tests fire alarms in school buildings, offices, portables, and modular classrooms.
  • Guides and coordinates the work of less experienced employees.
  • Maintains fire alarm testing and inspection programs and schedules; ensures systems have passed inspection.
  • Diagnoses and responds to alarm malfunctions; performs skilled electrical work.
  • Meets with school administrators, staff, and subcontractors regarding fire alarms and related matters.
  • Records and maintains accurate work logs, time and material usage, and inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Responds to emergency incidents such as fire damage, storm damage, and vandalism.
  • Communicates appropriately and frequently with faculty, administrators, supervisors, and employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Four years of experience in electrical installation, repair, and maintenance work involving fire alarm systems.
  • Valid class C Maryland driver’s license.
  • Preferred:
    Baltimore County Electrician’s License — Restricted (Low Voltage) or equivalent. Must be maintained throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of fire alarms, related systems, electrical codes, safety standards, and installation practices.
  • Skills in installation, maintenance, repair of fire alarms; reading and interpreting electrical codes, blueprints, schematics.
  • Ability to diagnose, resolve problems, manage projects, supervise staff and contractors, and communicate effectively.
  • Proficient with database, spreadsheet, and word‑processing software (preferred).
Physical and Environmental Conditions
  • Heavy physical labor: walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, bending, digging, lifting moderate to heavy objects, ascending/descending ladders, scaffolds, stairs.
  • Work in confined spaces near loud machinery; crawl spaces, roofs, trenches, manholes, attics, tunnels.
  • Exposure to live circuits, operating machinery, adverse weather; travel throughout Baltimore County.
Conditions Of Employment
  • Essential Personnel; required to work during school closures, adverse weather, or emergencies.
  • Scheduled overtime and emergency overtime as needed.
  • May be requested to work an alternative schedule or shift temporarily.
  • License to drive in Maryland and ability to operate a pickup truck or van required.
  • License(s) must be verified and maintained in good standing; failure may result in disciplinary action.
  • Attendance in training for low‑voltage licensure and certifications required.
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders subject to alcohol and drug testing.
Salary and Benefits
  • Pay rates range from $25.99 – $39.16 per hour.
  • Grade: 09/American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) pay scale.
  • Eligible for Baltimore County Employees’ Retirement System and a comprehensive benefits program (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, disability, 403(b)/457 plans, paid holidays, sick/ personal/business days, bereavement, FMLA, sick bank, board‑approved leaves).
